So I took my 6-spd 2001 C5 vert in for an oil change before it gets put away from the Wisconsin winter. While I was there I had the dealer investigate a bothersome rattle I get at low speeds when accelerating. It happens in gear, but in any gear when the car is coming off idle speed. It isn't engine knock.
The service manager (they handle lots of Vettes) took a ride with me and said that the sound is normal on the 6-speed cars. Anybody heard this sound before? Clutch seems strong. I've had the car since May and plan on keeping it until the wheels fall off...or a C6 becomes too irresistible
My 02 had it and so does my 04....normal but.......don't know why they couldn't have made it so it doesn't do it. I bet if it was Japanese made it wouldn't be doing it.
I back out of my driveway, throw it in gear, and as I slowly pull away, I hear the rattle. Yep, it's supposed to be common. Read this at southerncarparts:
Drivetrain rattling
The valvetrain makes a significant amount of noise at idle. It may sound like sewing machine. Converting the valve rockers to true shaft-mounted adjustable roller rockers with may help eliminate the valvetrain noise if adjusted properly. Installing a big cam and stiffer valve springs will make the noise louder.
On manual transmission cars (M6 or M12), the transmission sounds like it is rattling when leaving the line. It is normal. It is the clutch throwout bearing rattling around. Sometimes you'll hear a horrible rattle if you shut off the engine. If you press the clutch pedal in while shutting off the car, you won't hear it.

Is this issue related to the southerncarparts explanation about the drivetrain rattling?
I always shut the car down with the clutch in (after reading a post about it here). It doesn't completely eliminate the rattle, but it does eliminate the stares of awe as it's MUCH quieter.
Does shutting it down without the clutch engaged cause any damage? I figure not, but I might as well ask.
I have been looking at EVERYTHING under the car trying to figure out what it was with no luck. I'm glad somebody posted this. Worst for me is going through the covered checkpoints getting onto the military bases. I either have to go higher RPM with my loud *** exhaust or rattle around at low RPM. Of course either way echoes... The gate guards don't appreciate the high RPM and the rattle sounds plain awful and is almost embarrassing!
I have an 04 that has the annoying clutch rattle that I have read about. The odd thing is I used to have an 02 with a 6 speed and it didn't make the noise. I have read that the 02 makes that noise too. Why do some rattle and others don't? Wish there was a fix. Sounds like a semi-truck clutch. Drives me crazy!!!!!!!!
, I really didn't notice until after installing headers and new sways. Been going to get under the car for the last couple of weeks but, haven't had time.
