Default Vette security system

Noob question here. Only had the '03 Z06 for two weeks, but loving it. The question is just how bullet proof is the anti-theft system?

I know with a flatbed tow truck, nothing is 100% effective. Just how well does our system work? Can the electronic system be defeated?

Am I too paranoid?

If you've got a secure location for keeping your Vette, put it there, and beef up your security in that location.

If you've got it outside like I do, put it under a good cover, and lock the cover down.

Just a few weeks ago, a member here posted a video of his Vette being broken into and his stereo system stolen, all while he was inside asleep. He had video cameras, DVR, and an infrared beam that wasn't operational, or else he would have been alerted to the perp in action.

No windows shattered or anything, just got the door opened in what seemed like 5-7 seconds, and took his time removing everything. 2nd time on the Vette, from what the OP stated.

Paranoia is fine, as long as you don't become victimized.

Understand.

The Vette is in a garage at the home, and secure underground parking at work. Conceal and Carry License and Glock is the second layer of defense.

Not so worried about the bad guys stealing the stereo. More about smash and grab the whole car. I'm coming from an 1997 machine that could easily have the steering column smash, cross some wires and go. I'm assuming the need for the Chevy key, puter recognition, and there is no way to start the Vette without it. Bullet proof?

The security system is about as good as you can get. As the post above says "Either you have the key or a flatbed". A lot of people don't believe it until a part in the system fails and they can't start the car even when they have the key.

When GM introduced this system on the 86 C4 thefts of Vettes dropped considerably.

One of the nice things about the system is the time delay that starts when somebody uses an unrecognized key to start the car. On the C5 as soon as an incorrect key is turned a 3 minute timer is started that stops all subsequent start attempts. Each attempt resets the timer to the full 3 minutes. This means if somebody is trying different key combinations it takes a minimum of 3 minutes for each try. Given the 15 different electrical codes and quite a few mechanical codes that can be combined they could die of old age while trying.

The car cannot be push started if the correct key isn't used.
