Hi brothers and sisters! I got this code while on the freeway, with two hands on the wheel, looking straight and buying food for my sweet,, gray haired grandma. I know it's a Steering Sensor Bias Malfunction, after searching for a while and consulting the manual - I'm aware that I may need to rotate the steering wheel a full revolution left or right, but here comes a dumb question (s), How do you take the steering bolt off? Anything I should be aware off? Any short-cuts? Since I'm down there, what else should I do? I didn't go to no fancy school, and I have trouble just spelling anything. So, please be easy on me!
Do an Advanced search on 1286 in just the C5 forums, and you'll see a bunch of hits on that code. This may give you some ideas on what others have done to fix it.
I tried doing the searches, but nothing was real specific. I just want to know exactly where the steering box is, what areas to dismantle, and what to watch out for.
But thanks for the reply!
Someone already had to experience this! What do I need to do to get more attention to this post? I wave to other corvettes all the time I'm a good guy, well I think I am. The only thing I got, is a vague manual, a dash of A.D.D. and a steering wheel that thinks I'm making u-turns all day! What do I need to do to get more attention to this post?
I saw that thread...but I thank you both! I'm nervous about dismantling the steering area since I never did that before, also I'm not sure what take out, what to watch out for...and finding the right bolt..
Aloha Kona! thank you sneakel!

Trust me bru, with the pics on that thread, and some common sense(aqcuired after seeing things in real time) you'll be just fine. There isn't anything that you can screw up really. Just keep in mind that you must pull fuse #16 AND disconnect the battery. Once you've done that, it's simply a matter of bolts, nuts, and connections. You may even be able to change it out leaving the column in the car. Try to pull the sensor off the colummn first. If it doesn't come off, then take the column out.
Follow the write ups, with pics, and you'll be cool man.
Thanks Sneakel! i clicked on the wrong link and click the correct one. It has a ton of info and for that my brother you are the best! I'll let you know what happens....you are the man!
Dang! I hit my first curb in over 10 years! On my CCW's! I'm going to wet-sanded down, what rotten luck! I want to blame it on a girl, but yep...it was me. Another addition to my weekend of revenge!!!
I was prepared to do this after I got 1286 code. I checked the connector first. Turns out it was loose. Reset the code and no issues since.
I agree before you replace the sensor make sure the connections are on tight. If you have telescoping steering wheel and you have to replace the sensor try doing it without fully removing the column. Cobra4B, who is a pretty good wrench turner, and I spent an entire Sunday replacing my sensor, we never did get the connecting rod between the telescoping motor hooked back up after pulling the column, and the telescoping motor made pulling and replacing the column a nightmare On the bright side..... no more codes (knock on wood)
