I have a '98 TR Vert that is completely stock. You really have to listen close to hear the exhaust. It is definitely lacking the infamous Corvette rumble. I can't risk a lot of money replacing a perfectly fine exhaust system and I can't risk offending my better half (she thinks it sounds fine now). Would a used Z06 system provide more growl than my stock system?

Thx for your comments!
you sound like you could use an electric Cutout. Keeps the Wifey Happy and lets you play when she's not along for the ride.... or maybe when she is

Good idea there,,OR use cut outs WITH the Ti system!! Word on the forum is they do have a better sound than regular stockers, lighter ,and flow a bit better!! Or a good set of USED Corsa touring could provide what you are looking for,,Subtle improvement in sound at idle and normal driving.A nice respectable howl at WOT and silent on highway cruise!!

I put Ti's on mine. I love the sound, but would like a little more of it. I've never heard it from outside the car, but think it sounds good when I get on it.

The Z06 exhaust will give you a bit more noise, but not a whole lot. Try something like a B&B Route 66 or similar offerings from Borla or Corsa. Mid-America used to have a link on their website that you could listen to the various exhausts - not sure if it is still there.
Best option is to just find other Corvettes with aftermarket exhausts and take a listen to them.
Cheapest way to begin to initiate the wife to how a Corvette should sound is to have the A&A bypass mod performed at a muffler shop, if you can't do it yourself. That sounds really good for just a few bucks and is not off the wall. You will really like it. Once she gets used to that you can move into a GHL system. That one will make, or break, your relationship especially if you put headers and high flow cats on at the same time. Resonance-free but fantastic sound.

There is a set for $380 in the f/s section in Ca. but he doesn't want to ship it right now.
I bought my GHL's used and love them.
You should hear some in person before deciding.
Good luck.
I haven't heard of the A&A mod before. But it sure sounds like that is what I will be trying before spending over $500 on a used exhaust system, hoping for better sound.
Thank you everyone for chiming in.
Once you go to the CORSA you will love it. I have mine with KOOKS and I can still have a conversation. It is quite on the highway but will get your attention at WOT.
Best advice I can give you is to have both of you go listen to some vettes local to you and see what you think. Everyone here will tell you to get the set up they have, but what might be loud to you might not be loud to the next person etc etc..
That said, yes the stock Z06 TI will rumble a little more and does sound better than the stock C5. You can normally pick a set up for 300 or so bucks give or take here on the forum.
Oh, for goodness sakes! Just put a set of Borla Stingers on her. Put them on my 02 vert and they are just great. Better sounding than Corsa, and I've heard many. Four tube has a little less "rumble" than two tube. I have two tube. Love the look, love the sound. Good Luck! PS: Know full well what you mean about the "significant other".
Find an exhaust shop or welder .
Have a 6"-8" pipe welded in(see photos)
Shou;d be able to get it done for around $100.
Will give a little more rumble at idle and will not drown out your radio.
At WOT most sound goes strait out the back! As its mostly strait through.
Great Mod for the $buck!
You can always go louder but then your gona hear it all the time.
This also works great with Z0-6 / Tis.
Note to C5 purests: This was a dealer installed option on '97s.
Later called the "A&A Mod."
Believe it or not Youtube is a pretty good source. Do a search on something like C5 corvette and whichever of the suggested catbacks you want, and you might be surprised what you find. I wanted to know what the B&B Bullet's sound like on a c5 Z. Did that search and found a ton. I want 'em, bad!!!! But you definitely don't want the Bullet's.
I have BB Bullits on my '00 A4 Vert. There is a drone during around town driving but not noticable when cruising, definately a great sound when I step on it though.
The wifes '01 mn6 Vert has Borla Stingers. She loves the Borlas and hates my Bullits. The Borlas do have a nice low rumble at idle and no drone at all.
Both cars are stock motors, headers and cats. Both engines dyno'd at 305+rwhp and 311+tq.
