I finally got around to changing out the shifter for an aftermarket shifter. WOW!! What a difference. No longer do I have long throws and some slop between the gears, but everything is tight and the throws are short.
If you have a 6 speed and are thinking about changing out the shifter, DO IT. There will be no regrets.
I had never ever driven my Z before I bought a B&M Shrt throw. I really love it. My brother (installed it while i was deployed) said its a night and day differance. I changed my trans and diff fluid to redline oil about a month ago!! That helped make the notchy B&M smoother!!
Just put the MGW on and it is great. Goes into 6th so much better, and the short throw is fantastic. Feel much more confident shifting that it will hit the gear.
Took about an hour to install. The hardest thing was getting the wedge out to remove the old ****. The instructional CD was great. I have the shop manual, but ended up putting the lap top on a box out side the car, covered the passanger seat, put the tools on the passager seat and just enjoyed working on my vette
Nice. Yea I was pissed I waited so long to get a short-throw in my car too. I went with the B&M and Love it. Tried the MGW and it is fine too, but my personal preferences is the B&M.
For those that have not replaced your stock shifter, all I'll say is that Shifters are like Cat-back exhaust... everyone has a different taste in what they like. Don't just go out and buy whatever the latest "craze" is here on the forum (that being the MGW).
I switched out to the MGW shifter (item C1030). There were 2 options available 15% throw reduction and 30% throw reduction. I went with 30%. I agree with FrankTank that their are many good options out there. No matter which brand you choose, IT WILL BE BETTER than the stock shifter.
