Default Can't find right size headlight adjuster hole plug - help!

I have a 1997 C5. One of those darn plastic plugs plugs for the headlight adjuster hole popped out and disappeared. I am having a very hard time locating a replacement plug. According to all the vendors and junkyards I have talked to and ordered replacement plugs from, there are supposed to be just 2 style plugs out there.

#1 - Small diameter push-in plug for 97-99
#2 - Large diameter twist-to-lock plug or 2000+

Well, go figure, my 97 has neither design. Mine is large diameter like the 2000+ design, but it's not twist-to-lock, its a push-in plug.

Here are some photos to help you understand.

Does anybody know where I can get the style plug I need? Is is some GM production line freak? Or do I have to cannibalize another C5 headlight housing and steal the entire plastic shroud?

Help! My car looks crappy with the missing plug!

Default headlight

Check in your glove box. I know there are two plugs, one on each side.
They look like they would fit in your headlight holes. If they fit, it might be easier to cover the glove box holes with something else. My owners manual is the only thing in my glove box, so removing them wouldn't be a problem.

Just do what I did.
Take a black top from a spray can and cut a circle off it bigger than the hole and just super glue it to the suround. You probaly will never adjust the headlights any way. If you need to, just remove the suround.
I think it is 3 screws.
You will never have to worry about it again.

If you need the larger plug BPF 2 1/8 use the link below to contact the company Caplugs that made them.

I called the 888 number years ago and they sent me a couple of replacements in the mail, ask for a couple of samples of that size.

The part number is BPF 2 1/8

http://www.caplugs.com/

Click on Select a Series tab, then look for the BPF series

If you need just one, PM me your address I drop one in the mail.

Reinstall them with black or clear silicone from the inside of the bezel cover so they won't pop off again.

Thanks for the GREAT info! That's why I love this forum. Called Caplugs and they do still sell the plugs, but minimum order size is 200 and weren't willing to send samples. But, they did give me the name/number of a stocking supplier of their products.

Denco, in Ohio. 440-967-6165. Gave the lady over the phone the BPF 2 1/8 part number and she said she would send me a couple samples free of charge.

Glad to hear it worked out. Guess Caplugs got tired of sending these over the last ten years.

Get the order of 200 and sell em here on the forum, LOL!

I used clear silicone on my plugs and they are rock solid now...

Silicone or some other adhesive is the way to solve the problem. It isn't that hard to remove the whole cover to gain access so make sure the plug never comes out again.

There were two style of both plugs and covers that the plugs go in. The plugs do not interchage. When I purchased my 98 a couple years ago I had the same issue. I went ahead and purchased two of the newer style covers and plugs. They were not very expensive and it was an easy swap out.

I have a similar problem with my 98. I ordered them from Ecklers. However, I didn't realize there were several designs. I need the plug you have labeled as 2nd design with the notch, but I received the plugs you apparently need. They fit the hole, but don't hold very well. I have 2 and I'm going to try and make 1 fit my car by but if you want the other, I'd be happy to send it to you.

Below is a photo of what I have.

If you'd rather get it from Ecklers, here's the link.

Do the 2-1/8 caplugs fit the hole tight enough to stay in without using silicone to glue them in?

Back when I had my '99, I had the same problem. Dealer replaced the original bezels and plugs with the newer design that had the slot in the plug. Never lost another one. Try gmpartshouse.com for the newer style.

Oddly enough - no, the replacement plug didn't fit perfectly. It was definitely the right part #, and same manufacturer, but something must have changed over the years. Maybe the manufacturing process changed, or the spec tolerance is different, I dunno. The 2-1/8 plug visually appears the same, but it is just a tad too loose to click in and lock like the OEM plug. I used a bit of silicone RTV around the lip to ensure it doesn't pop out in the future. Visually, it appears perfect and matches the other headlight.

I went ahead and ordered the second design plug (part #10435410) since they were only $3, and will use a dab of black silicone one of the tabs to keep it from turning. It should stay locked in place as long as it cannot rotate.
I was going to try to get the standard caplug, but so far I have not found a local dealer. I may still try to get a couple just to see if they will stay in.
