I have a theory why some people do not like the sound of the Bose, particularly younger people (under 40?). If you don't think it applies to you then ignore this theory and don't take offense.
A lot of people perceive loud heavy boosted bass as being a "superior" sound. I can tell this from talking to people and listening to the ridiculous thump boxes in cars I can hear from a block away. It doesn't matter to them that the sound they are hearing is far from high fidelity and is often distorted. The fact that they can feel the thump makes it "good" sound quality. Why else would someone need 1000 watts or more of power in a car?
When the source material has inherent bass in it, the Bose system is very capable of reproducing that bass at least to my ears. If the source material is poor or has little inherent bass the natural reaction of many is to assume that the sound system is poor. Then they turn up the bass as high as possible to make it sound "better".
In short, I do not think a lot of people know what high fidelity really means.
I have the Bose in my 92 convert and never expected it to be great considering the speaker placement a Corvette convert requires tucked away under the rear deck. however, my Z06 Bose is not alot better, in my opinion, and I have been around Hi FI along time. My Trailblazer SS Bose is awesome, and I cannot explain why it is so much better than the Z06, and I have been in several Cadillacs with Bose that would rock your socks off. Maybe its the compromise of the hardtop, vrs the coupes big open area?
I agree the Bose doesn't have the low end bias that some aftermarket does, but then that is not necessarily realistic sound either.

There is nothing more subjective than sound quality. As you can see, opinions are all over the map. My main point is when someone says system X sounds like crap, listen for yourself first. You may have an entirely different opinion.
I kept my stock Bose system and added a bazooka subwoofer and amp in the back center compartment, fits perfectly and boosts up the sound just enough for me! I added a corvette CD changer I got from a forum member and I couldn't be happier. Cost me around $250 for everything
