Default How do you TUNE your car?

I keep reading people getting their car “tuned” on the dyno or get a “tune” it’ll give x amount of HP. I have a few questions regarding this:

1. How is the tune performed?
2. What equipment is required to perform the tune?
3. What does the tune do? (I assume it changes Air/Fuel Ratio, timing, etc…)
4. Does this have to be done at a Corvette specific shop / dyno? Or can any competent dyno place do this?

I’m thinking of doing a dyno in spring (once the snow melts and I get some good rubber). I wanted to know if I should / can get a tune at the local dyno place?

Thanks for any info.

1. The tuner will connect to the OBDII port on the computer, download the tune that is already in the ECM and start to make changes to it.

2. Laptop, corresponding software with which to do the tune, a competent tuner, and a dyno or rather unused portion of road.

3. You are correct. It makes adjustments to air/fuel, timing, and other parameters based on the modifications done to the car.

4. It doesn't have to be a Corvette shop, specifically. Someone that is familiar with tuning the LS based engines should be a given. Ask around in your area and you're bound to find a shop that does reputable work.
