Default Owning a C5 vette..........

I had another awakening today, not the first time. I was in the process of changing out my exhaust but had to wait for some different clamps to arrive. I though, what the heck, I'll see if I can fix the clunky butt, change the differential fluid and replace the fuel filter while I have it up in the air. I think I took care of the clunky butt, I hope. I drained the diff fluid and it looked really good. I'll have to hit the parts house tomorrow for some new fluid and a pump. I had to remove the exhaust I just installed to get to the fuel pump but I had to do that anyway to change the clamps out, so no big deal. That fuel filter ate my lunch! I thought I had the proper tools to release the fuel lines but found they were the wrong ones. I got it done but it took most of the afternoon to get the outlet line off the filter. The others were a piece of cake. There just isn't much room up there for a fat fingered old fart like me.
If your thinking about buying a vette and it needs maintenance, you'd better be damned handy and innovative, or, have a ton of disposable cash to spend at a shop. I love working on mine and I've learned a lot. I'm sure I'll be learning a whole lot more over time.
If it were not for the abundance of guidance and information I've gleened from this forum, I'd be screwed, and broke.....
Thanks to all of you!

While you are changing out the rear end fluid with new 75W-90 fluid, did you remember that you need 4 ozs of GM Anti-Slip fluid in there with it?

I keep Corvettes of Dallas on speed dial LOL. However you shouldn't have too many problems with the car as long as you keep it maintained.

I always thought you didn't need the additive w/ synttehic fluids. Was told the addditive was part of the make up of the fluid.

I heard there is a new fluid with the additive in it already, but the regular stuff you buy from Autozone and other car parts places, won't have it in it.

From reading posts on the Forum I believe there are limited slip fluids available that do not require the additive, ie, R.P., Amsoil, Valvoline and others. I'm pretty sure this is correct as it comes from some of the most knowledgeable folks on the Forum. I guess I'll find out, huh? Thanks for the reminder, though. I don't know if our rinky-dink parts house will have such a thing, but I guess I can order it.
Thanks, again...........

Got-r-done and man does it sound saaaaweeeeet! It actually sounds like a Corvette is supposed to. The post on how to get rid of the clunky butt worked and worked well. Asolutely no more clunking shifting from nuetral to drive or reverse. The right hand axle nut was a little loose, it seemed. Our illustrious parts house only had Valvoline Syn Power full synthetic 75W-90 gear oil. Says it's for limited slip differentials, so I'll see how it works. Valvoline product are usually pretty good.

The answer is that it depends. The older GM diff fluid that was the spec part when our cars were made did not come with the additive and a bottle of additive was needed. The relatively new GM Dexron LS diff fluid does come with the additive. Aftermarket fluids come both with and without additive. For example, Red Line makes a diff fluid without the additive and one with it. The AMSOIL Severe Gear Extreme Pressure Synthetic 75w90 I use in my Z06 and CTS-V does have the additive.

For a completely different Corvette experience, change your A/C belt.

Is this also for 6 speed manual?

Transmission makes no difference.... rear end is seperate. I like the GM additive. I tried others and got clutch chatter in the posi clutch pack.

As covered by 81c3, the tranny is totally different. The tranny (auto or manual) takes a fluid meeting Dexron III specs. The auto can use the newer Dexron VI spec fluid, the manual can not.

And as I mentioned above, be careful about blindly adding a bottle of the anti-slip fluids. Many fluids today, including the new GM Dexron LS diff fluid come with the limited slip additive in it already.
