I'm in the market for a harmonic balancer. I've heard several people telling me what not to use but none telling me what will work better. I have a 98 Vette. I want it to stay driveable because it is my primary transportation but I also appreciate the small gains of buying the right one. I do use A/C and don't want to lose the alternator power. Can any of you recommend a harmonic balancer that will give me any increase in performance without losing the driveabilty. Thanks for your help. I'm not going to use the OEM so don't worry about that.
I just installed the Powerbond unit. No charging issues and it doesnt slow down the AC compressor anyway. Its the same balancer as the SLP underdrive unit.
You wont feel any gains, this is done either in conjunction with a cam change or other engine work - or when the stock bolt or balancer became problematic.

What's the difference between steel and aluminum and why would I buy or not buy aluminum? It would seem to make the car spin up quicker because of the lighter weight, is this correct?

The weight differance is very small and some companies advertise 10 to 12 horsepower increase, but it more likely under 5. The gain is simply less drag by spinning the accessories slightly slower. This is generally not a stand alone mod.
I dont know what differance having a steel or alum balancer would make, if you drop either one it cant get damaged.

Aluminum is for race only, what ever balancer you chose do yourself a favor and pin it to the crank.
Remember the function of the balancer is to dampen harmonics in the crankshaft so it needs to be of the proper weight.
I got the harmonic balancer you recomended. Is the torque really 240 ft/lbs for the bolt? If so, that a strong bolt, huh? I guess it has to be that high because there is no pin in it. What if you pin it?
