I painted my powder coated Mallett wheels with spray cans. After a thorough cleaning and a light sanding they received three coats of color followed by three coats of clear.
I painted mine with the duplicolor satin black. Turned out great!!! i get compliments all the time on my wheels. Many people think i had my wheels powder coated. You just have to prep your wheels very well and clean them. I did alot of research before i actually painted them. If you do do it don't rush it take your time. This first time i did it on another car we put the wheels on to soon and we had to touch up the wheels later on. Duplicolor recommends letting your wheels sit for a couple days. I also used the duplicolor clear coat and it really made the wheels hold up better through rain and from brake dust. If have any questions let me know
I painted mine and a couple of other sets for people and they turn out better and better each time. All I did was...
1. wash them well with soupy water.
2. I used a green brillo pad because they are very flexible and last longer then sand paper for scuffing purposes.
3. Scuff the rims till you see a the shine dissapear.
4. Wash them again with soupy water.
5. I have some of those 500 watt very bright yellow shop lights, so I placed the rims on 1 gallon paint cans so they were off the floor (easier on the back) and placed the lights about 12" or less away from them to heat up the rims.
6. Always paint the backside and the part you will not see first with your 3-4 coats, then do the face starting at the center, move to the inside of each spoke, next the face, and lastly the outer ring.
7. I use 3-4 coats of paint and at least 4-5 coats (1 can) of clear making the last one nice and heavy. DO NOT PUT THE CLEAR ON TOO HEAVY OR IT WILL CRACK. Don's ask!! The heat from the lamp helps bake the paint and clear on very quickly.
I USE THE LAMPS!! It is the only way to go with using spray cans.
anybody just spry flat black paint and no clear coat?
I did my old Y2K % spokes with Dupli-Color Wheel Paint (Flat Black). Used blue painters tape to mask off the areas and put index cards in between the wheel and tire to keep paint off the Tire itself. Then just scuffed the clear off with green scotch brite pads. wiped it with rubbing alcohol and sprayed. The good thing about that paint is that it does not require a coat of primer because it pretty thick, does not run and is rated to 500 degrees.
I scuffed my silver thin spokes with a scotch brite pad, painted pass. side gunmetal gray, drivers side satin black. The real trick is to not get in a hurry, don't put paint on too fast. It looks great, I liked the gray color better for my car.
