Haven't done it personally, but I've known Vette owners who've put new exhaust systems in without cats and they often complain of the gas smell in the cars cabin.

Mike Mercury gutted his cats and did a nice write up with pictures of the process but it is no longer on his website. I know people that have done it and the car sounds a little better and there was no gas smell. Maybe Mike will read this and help you out

Personally doesn't seem worth the effort to me. If you want better sound, install some long tubes with hi-flow cats. Sound plus better performance.

When I first had the Vette, my cats were rattling and I just replaced them with some straight pipes welded in there place. It got a lot louder and loved the sound! I know have LT's w/no cats and B&B Bullets. Love it!

personally I cant stand the sounds cats make while Im beating the guts out of them...I find its better to strangle them so they cant make any noise...gauntlet style gloves are recommended to prevent scratches!

Sorry, I couldnt resist!

I have personally witnessed this first hand. For this reason alone the effort is not worth it. However, you can mitigate this with tuning.
