Telescoping steering wheel - question on position
I test-drove 2 cars with telescoping steering wheel and I found that I liked the wheel extended out furthest towards me. Tomorrow I am testing a 2004 C5 car WITHOUT the telescoping option, so how will that stock steering wheel position compare to my favored position?
Hope I explained the question...............

thanks

That is the single thing I don't like about my TBSS and Denali. Especially after just getting out of the Vette and hopping in one I am miserable. Actually I wish I knew how to bring the steering wheel in even closer.
Driving position may be more important than steering wheel position. In NASCAR the steering wheel is right up against the driver, as opposed to sportscar driving positions. This requires you to "pass" the wheel between hands and let it "slip" to straighten out. This works for them because their turns are gentle and ,of course, only one way.
The old rule of thumb for sportscar driving was an elbows relaxed (slightly bent) position and the ability to turn the wheel around from the 9-10/2-3 grip without reaching at the top. It carried over from the racing (sportscar/formula) style of hand position. The method taught was to cross your hands but maintain your grip, and unwind to straighten the wheel. This requires that the wheel be away from you, and/or the seat be a bit further back. Road courses were/are more like street driving and compare to everyday driving situations.
One thing that is incorrect is to grip the wheel on the inside diameter at the bottom and twist it around for turns, a common sight seen today. Of course this allows for one handed driving, a poor and dangerous habit.
When I was a driving instructor for SCCA many years ago the sportscar technique was the way we taught, and I still use that method today in street driving. The wheel position alone shouldn't be the primary factor over the entire cockpit position. Corvette seats have enough adjustment that will allow you to be comfortable wherever the wheel ends up for you. Whether it's fixed or moveable.
Thanks for the info, Mike (and everyone else). I'm 6'3" so I don't have a lot of leeway in the seat adjustment. The seat needs to be pretty much all the way back, or I don't fit. I don't wanna have my arms way outstretched to reach the wheel.
