[Z06] 01 & 02 Differences revisited:
When trying to decide if the differences between the 01 and the 02 were worth trading for and using the article in the link so kindly provided by Jerry Velder, here is a list of the differeces in a somewhat condensed form. if I've stated anything inaccurately or failed to include something, please correct me.
'02 ZO6 Changes
New Cats - Provides less back pressure and opportunity to increase induction
New Air-Filter Assy. - Allows higher air volume for induction system
New MAF Sensor - Screen removed to increase air induction
New Cam - Higher lift on intake and exhaust valves. .525 to .551 on intake and from .525 to .547 on exhaust. Once again, better induction.
New Valves - Hollow stem, sodium/potassium filled to make valves lighter to avoid floating at high RPM.
New Valve Springs - Stiffer springs to accomodate a positive open/close action with the lighter valves.
New Oil Ring - Higher tension oil ring from 9lb. to 13 lb. Fixes the oil consumption problem caused by high RPM, low load piston flutter.
New Piston - Changed to have reduced piston to bore clearance and skirts coated with anti-friction polymer. Reduces 'cold piston knock' and reduces scuffing caused from the tighter tolerance between piston and cylinder wall.
New Clutch - Pressure plate clamp load increased from 2315 lbs. to 2475 lbs. (which also causes a stiffer pedal). Clutch disk damper spring rate increased and a higher grade of steel used for the springs. Hub thickness increased by 20%. (from 5mm to 6mm increase in thickness)
HUD Head Up Display
New Wheels - Lighter by 1.5 lbs. each. Maintains the strength of 100% forged wheels by using new (cast-spun) technology.
New Brake Pads - More aggresive material to increase stopping friction but may increase noise and dust while decreasing rotor life (at least under aggressive braking)
New Color - Electron Blue
Rear Shock Valving - Reduced "mid-velocity" stiffness (damping) that reduces wheel hop and chop. Increased stiffness (damping) in "low-velocity" range that re-casptures body control lost with "mid-velocity" changes. Net result is: less wheel hop and better ride comfort with no loss of handling (especially with corner exit acceleration)
New Front & Rear Stabilizer Links - Reduce weight. (no performance change)
That's about all I could find. I have read in other posts that there were some drivetrain changes but nothing was mentioned in the article. Any other info would be appreciated.
Are these changes enough to make me trade my (I mean Tammie's) '01 for the '02? In and of themselves, they are NOT. But.... these changes combined with the oil consumption problem or more specifically, the end results of the "FIX" for the problem was enough. I'll explain. Who knows how long we will keep this car. It is entirly possible that it would be a long time. How black an eye will the '01 ZO6's have over the oil consumption problem? Even if the new ring pack is installed, who knows how having a partially rebuilt motor will effect the value of the car in both the short and long term? Maybe not at all. Once the oil consumption problem became evident, the lovely and talented Tammie was beseeched by her OM (me) not to put many miles on it until we decided what to do. We are trading the car with only 3750 miles on it and because it is low mileage, we got what I think was a very fair trade in.
I personally wish there had been no problem with the '01 as we were completely satisfied with all aspects of the car save that one little problem.
Best regards,
Gomer
I am NEAR a deal on the same basis.......I am being offered 2500.00 off MSRP, and the rebate......SWEET deal for my area.
Problem, I have no oil issues as yet, and I test drove the car today.......
With the exception of the great exhaust notes......I could tell ZERO difference in performance.
My '01, put's down some really good #'s for a stock rig....
And to me, it seemed quicker than the '02.
I think I have read, where the '02's don't really make any difference until you get into the 4k plus rpm range, and this is where they leave the '01's by about 2 car lengths on a 1/4 mile......ALL things being equal.
My dilema, IS 2 car lengths worth the extra 10k to trade up??.
At this point, I think NO.........If I had an oil issue, I would probably go ahead and do the deal, at this point, I can put a lot of $5.00 a qt Mob 1 in, for 10Large........... ;)
I understand the dilemma well and apparently you do too. The only thing I'm worried about is the resale both long and short term. More specifically, mid-term as I will keep the car several years.
As far as the '02 not feeling as good as the '01 that might be caused by several reasons. The '02 is a softer ride on the street for one thing. Also, the '02 may not be broke in like your '01. One thing for sure, the car should launch harder. With the softer shocks in the back, there should be a sigificant reduction in wheel hop. A 20 HP increase is nothing you would feel in the 'seat of the pants' anyway.
The only time the oil consumption problem rears it's ugly head is under high RPM conditions where there is little load. If you tend to drive in a high gear most of the time, you may never see the problem. Anyone who stands on it everywhere they go or tracks the car will see the higher consumption.
The $2002 plus $2500 below MSRP does sound good though. Good luck with whatever you do!

The oil consumption issue on the '01 is one thing that's had me look hard at upgrading as well. As for GM's take on this isuue, all I can say is that my driving certainly will not qualify. If I'm at high rpm I'm also at full throttle, otherwise the engine's usually loafing. The high rpm/low load scenario is not my thing at all, but burn she does!
I'll wait and see what new delights are in store for model year 2003 ! :)
If you have the cash to go to a 2002, go for it.
The biggest hit will be the 385 hp vs. the current hp rating at the time of the trade. Buyers want the most hp they can get. If there is anything to be uspset about as far as devaluing the car, it's the immediate bump in hp for 02 (not that I'm upset because I'm not).

I was looking at going to an '02 with the rebate till the dealers I spoke with offered mid 30's for my 1900 mile '01 Z06. That convinced my my '01 is mighty nice! Heck, $10-12K will by a pretty nice winter "beater"car. :)
