Didnt really know where to post this, so I figured the guys who look here maybe have bought and sold on here before. I live in North Dakota, bought a car in Florida. Whats the safest way to pay? Ebay offers like a 3rd party service I believe. Its a private sale didnt buy from a dealership or anything to that matter.
I live in Ohio and just purchased my c6z off ebay in september, what I did was after many conversations on the phone with the ebay seller I flew down and inspected the car and then called my bank and had them do a wire transfer which took about a half hour, put my tag on the back and drove 16 hrs home. I am always uncomfortable using a third party when wire transfers are so easy and fast. Feel free to pm me if you need anything I will be glad to help you,
I did mine with a bank to bank transfer also real easy and my bank also handled the TTL so I didn't have to deal with the county. All I had to do was inspect the car and make the call to the bank giving the OK and drove her home.

same as I did when I bought mine.... sent a deposit, went down and inspected it, did a wire transfer, and drove it home 7 hrs away...
Ditto.. I sent 500 bucks paypal and brought a bank check to buy mine. It was also an Ebay purchase. Drove her home 362 miles after taking a short vacation at the beach. (Mine happened to be in Va. Beach)

Lots of ebay cars here. Add mine. Saw the auction. Drove south to inspect it and test drive it. Dealer tried to get me to pay 4 grand over what I did pay. I never let on that I was inspecting from an ebay ad. Won the auction. Sent $500. Paypal. Sent half Certified check and the remainder was paid with a check from Capital One Auto finance. He laughed when I showed up to pick up the car. I even paid less than the counter offer I made to his price.
If I may add onto this question - how do you handle the plates in a private transaction? Once you pay for it, you have to drive it home with plates on, do you use the seller's plates, or do you somehow get temporary tags? (if so, how?).
Also, what if the car has a lein on it. Sure you can pay the lein holder off using a wire-transfer, as stated above, but does the lein holder then immediately give you the title, if not how do you get it?
I bought my C4 on e-bay about 3 years ago. After several phone calls with the seller I won the auction. He told me that he was so sure that this was the car for me that he did not require a down payment and that when I came to pick it up if it was not exactly what I was looking for I did not own him anything. Went to pick it up 4 days later and the car was exactly what I was looking for. Paid him with a bank check and off I went.
Lesson learned - do your home work and speak with the seller and check out the seller.

You don't have to have plates on the car to drive it home. You have so many days to get the plates. Here in Iowa we have 30 days. You just need to keep the bill of sale with you in the car. If there is a loan on the car if all possible I would go with the guy to the bank to make sure he does pay it off. You still won't be able to take the title with you then because it takes a while for all the paper work to go through but this way you know that you will get the title. If he has the loan at a bank a long ways away I bel;ieve you can make your check out to the bank and the seller that way he can't just take the money and not pay the car off

I believe in PA you can go to a tag/title agent and get a temp(10-15 day) tag, with VIN# and proof of insurance. But, don't quote me on that.
Just make sure it has a clear title before you do the transaction to avoid any liens that might be on the car.
I bought a Camaro Z28 through a private party once. Had no problems registering the car, however, the previous owner had 12 speeding tickets in it. If there was a cop within a mile of the car, I was getting pulled over. I probably got pulled over no less than 100 times during the 5 years I owned it because of the prev. owner's speeding tickets. I kept going to the DMV and explaining to them what was happening, but there was no record of the tickets there. What a PITA it was!! I finally sold the car just so I wouldn't get pulled over any more!
