In the process of winterizing the vette I filled the tank up at the station with the automatic shutoff- I then drove it on some errands before I brought it home to wash and put away.
I had about 3/4 tank of gas according to the gauge. I figured with an 18 gallon tank I needed 4 gallons to fill it back up to prevent moisture from accumulating. Well I bought two gallons of 93 octane and figured that would be good enough.
I added the two gallons from the small container manually and the gauge reads full but now I am afraid that I overfilled it... It did not pour out onto the side of the car but with no automatic shutoff I could be very high in the fill neck... could I be damaging my charcoal canister or anything by storing it like this for the winter? I thought I read somewhere that it was bad to go past the first click on the auto shutoff at the gas station but can't remember why.
I added whatever stabil I had left in the garage and ran it for 5 minutes before shutting it off and putting the float charger on it.
Thanks for the advice- I would but it is 27 degrees with snow and salt everywhere and I just washed it! And unfortunately I am not worried enough to again risk pneumonia and frost bite by hose washing it again in this weather! I see you have forgotten your time in Columbus ;-)
I am 98% sure it is no big deal but I have never had a car sit for longer than a day or two as I always daily drove my past monsters.
The problem with overfilling the tank on these cars is it messes with the float and/or sending unit. It can get stuck in the Full or Empty position. Add a bottle of Stabil or Techron. If you think you overfilled. Fire it up and just let it idle for a while and get the oil good and hot. Say 180-200 deg. Then shut it down and cover it up.
I have had a few pumps, including one this week, that did not shut off even though I was manually holding the handle, and gas did actually run out on the ground..
I did not have any problems, but I drive my car everyday, and it only stayed full over night.

I fill mine up past the first pump shut off every time. I do drive mine everyday also. I have done this on every vehicle I have ever owned. If you are worried about it, back it up to the edge of the garage and let it run for 20 or 30 minutes. That should let the level go down some.
no worries.. Its Columbus... if you dont like the weather wait a day or two and it'll change.. if it stays cold just pull it in to the street and do a few 6000 rpm burnouts for the neighbors... that ought to burn some fuel!!
besides.. you dont want those tires to get dry rot do you?:o
