Wise idea to not take the vette. Should be ok for a daily driver though. If you do decide to make a trip let me know. A friend of mine is the General Manager of a Holiday Inn on Grand Island (5 minutes from the falls).
The drive along the Niagara Parkway from Fort Erie (Buffalo Peace Bridge Crossing) to the Falls is very scenic. Along the way there are many wineries you can visit if you are so inclined. Niagara on the Lake is a quaint picturesque village with many shopping boutiques for your wife to enjoy. There are a couple of very nice restaurants. Unfortunately one lady from Hong Kongs owns many of the hotels and the prices are in my opinion over the top ($300/night )
The Sheraton Fallsview or Comfort suites Fallsview are nice properites
here is a link to a website for many of the Falls view hotels.... http://www.niagarafallsbest-hotels.com/
Here is a link to restaurants. The ones at the wineries are expensive but excellent. http://www.niagaraonthelakerestaurants.com/
