It seems this is a divided topic.
My own personal experience is that without fail whenever I leave a lawnmower, weed trimmer, leaf blower or chainsaw filled with untreated fuel over the winter that starting is very difficult the next spring. When I use a fuel stabilizer like Sta-bil or SeaFoam, it is ALWAYS1 or 2 pull starting.
The benefit of SeaFoam over Sta-bil is that is not only stabilzes the fuel but it is also a very good fuel system cleaner.
I spend a lot of dollars on toys, it costs less than $10 total to treat the 3 Vettes, lawn tractor, lawn mower, weed trimmer, leaf blower and chainsaw prior to winter storage.
I let the needle run down to about 1/3 full...add Sta-Bil, fill it up with top tier gas run it a little while and then put it in the garage. Winters here in ATL are mild and the car is driven at least monthly....so never a problem.
I have spent more money on more foolish things...so the $10 or $12 gives peace of mind.
Stabil it is. I will run the fuel level down some, add the Stabil, and top it off with Shell 93. Baring a long, nasty, winter...my next trip will be to ECS for my dyno tune....
I disagree.
Do the Sta-bil.
Q: What's the cost for peace of mind?
A: Less than 10 bucks to know that your old un-stabilized gas won't gum up your Vette's innards.

Great idea. Also, I had my C5 dyno tuned at ECS this past summer. Glad that I did, made a big difference.
