Default fob not working

I have a '99 and the fob had alzheimer for awhile, but now does not work at all. I have changed the battery, but it still doesn't work. Any ideas?

I assume that after the battery change you tryed resyncing it (press and hold both Lock and Unlock buttons until horn beeps), or tried relearning it (proc in Owner Manual)? If so you may need to meet Gene at gmpartshouse...

I agree with all of the above replies. I tried contacting GM about the fob failures and all I could get from them was to contact the dealer. The dealers don't have a clue. Some people have replaced the batteries where it started to work again. Others have found hairline cracks in one of the circuit connections inside, resoldered and all was good again, But, for the most of us, once they start loosing their internal memory, they are done and you can only end up buying new ones. Gene Culley has the best prices around for them. I can tell you the new ones from GM, are assembled in Mexico but so far, I'm unable to locate the manufacturer or a schematic for one. Eventually GM will stop having them manufactured too, so there is going to be a huge aftermarket requirement for them as the originals all seem to die after 8-10 years.

Mine doesn't work very well at my house (I have to basically be against the window for it to work) but woerks from across a parking lot at the mall 6 miles away. I must have some odd electromagnetic fields at my house.

Do you have high tension wires close? I noticed that when I was close to some my remote got even worse than normal - kind of like yours, I needed to be right next to the car...

FOB could have totally gone out - might want to try your second one and see if it still works. If you don't have a second one, I agree with gettting ahold of Gene at gmpartshouse.com.

neither one of the fobs work. They are not even recognized when I go to programm them. So I guess it's time to replace them.

You can go to O'reilly's and check them they have a free tester on the counter. I'd hate to spend on new ones and it be the reciever in the car.

Grab a friends FOB that has the same year range as you, and try to sync up their FOB with your car. If it syncs, then you know your receiver is working OK.
Another thing is go into your DIC and go to FOB training, and try to re-train both your FOBs to your car. Sometimes just holding down lock/unlock doesn't do it. Especially after a battery change.

Unless a FOB has been trained to a car, it can not sync...

You can re-train it to your car. Then re-train back.

Both of my fobs went south. Can get replacements from dealer parts buddy for about $78 but they want $50. to program. Does a new one have to be programmed by a dealer. This is for a 99 coupe.
Thanks for any info guys!

No, it does not have to be trained by a dealer - you can DIY in less than 5 mins :

1. Turn ignition key to ON position, don't start.
2. Clear any warning messages on the DIC by pressing RESET button.
3. Press the OPTIONS button on the DIC several times until the blank page is displayed, then press and hold the RESET button for two seconds.
4. When the message FOB TRAINING is displayed, push the RESET button once. The message HOLD LK + UNLK 1ST FOB will be displayed.
5. Press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter simultaneously for 15-20 seconds.
6. When a transmitter is learned, the DIC will display FOB LEARNED and then prompt you to learn the next transmitter.
7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for each additional transmitter (up to 3 transmitters can be learned).
8. Remove key from ignition.

No, nothing major around my house. Plus, my other fobs for other cars have always worked fine (1999 Outback, 2001 Silverado, Viper (company) alarm on my old 1985 Blazer) and none of my neighbors complain about their fobs not working right. It's just my luck.
