I am prepairing to take off my computer of my 98 vert and send it to chuck for a tune. I am sure all will be fine and iI wont regret a thing. I would like to get some feed back from anyone that has had his mail in tune done to there vette and how much of a difference did it make... Im not looking for a huge if any HP improvement, just looking for a more crisp and responsive throttle. just wanted some input,,, and looking forward to the excitement...... I guess Im one of those dont fix it if it aint broke kinda guys,,,, but im doing it,,,,, responses please.
I haven't had one of Chuck's tunes, but I'm a tuner myself, and I can tell you this:
If you have an A4... be prepared for a significantly different car. We can access and modify driveability significantly more with an A4 car (shift times, pressures, rpms, etc). On an M6 car, there is still a good bit of room to play depending on how aggressive a tune you want to get, but it won't be a OMG WOW! change. And that pesky CAGS(I find it supremely annoying). Another thing is that the 98 computer was a slightly different animal (much as the 98 engine was), so it's a little different to work with.
Rocco,
I'm with you on this... I saw the post for the 1/2 price tunes and have been contemplating it as well. I have an 04 Coupe with an A4, I would like to hear from the "tuned" crowd as to what I would expect upon re-installing the cpu.
In states where emissions inspections are required with the computer checked for codes and/or simulator tested, won't the tune be an issue?
And if a car is still under GM warranty, won't the tune be detected and void the warranty?

I'm in California...we have the dreaded SMOG....will the tune cause any problems with me passing???

If you meet the emissions standards (not an issue unless you have a huge cam, maybe), and the visual , tuning the trans will have nothing to do with SMOG testing.
...and that was my point. Advice regarding one state may not apply to another state, particularly CA...
That's why I'm still on the fence here... I'm waiting to hear from any fellow Californians who have a COW tune, and the smog implications if any. Trouble is, he's an east coast tuner... I'll wait and see.
He travels around the USA quite a bit, so mail order isn't the only way to get his tuning services.
Maybe another option to consider, but more costly, would be to buy a spare computer for the tune.
But, if you car needed warranty repairs and/or needed the annual inspection, it would have to be changed out to the original computer.
On an otherwise stock car, would the cost of a spare computer plus the tune be worth it?
I can't speak for any other tuners personally accept for Chuck.
He's a class act though, great customer service and you can literally call him at 10 pm and he'll help you out.
He does know his stuff and he won't lock your PCM if you ask him not to.
Depending upon a tuners skills, I could understand why you might want to lock a tune(always letting the customer know).
My car runs great with a pretty basic setup LT's/vararam/exhaust and passed CA smog in flying colors with better C02, HC's etc...than stock.
Sort of surprised that Chuck hasn't chimed in here.
I have an 04 Z06 and I wonder what one of these tunes would do for me?
You will love it...I have an 04 CE Z06....Chuck did mine April of '07....I added headers about a year later and he re-tuned it for free.
You will be glad you did it !!!!
