Default Heads up help!

Just got my '03 Z06 and found out the Heads up display is reflecting very low on the windshield. Tried adjusting it with the buttons but it only moves up slightly (still out of sight). I noticed the ring on the outside of the housing is cracked, not sure its from the exposure to heat or what (Florida car). I was wondering if anyone can tell me what might be wrong? Is it the cracked ring of the housing, cuz this seems more like a cosmetic piece? I tried searching the topic but couldn't find anything. I cant believe I'm the only one that has had this problem. Can the heads up be fixed without removing the windshield? Thanks in advance for your help and advice!

Rick

Rick,

The HUD can be totally removed/replaced without removing the windshield - don't even be thinking along those lines. There was just a thread here earlier this week (last week maybe) regarding how to repair a broken tab on the HUD projector that aims the view onto the windshield. The symptoms people were reporting were that their HUD would move when pressing the up/down buttons, but would not go full travel. Keep searching and I'm sure you'll find the thread. Worst case, go back several pages (I know for a fact it was either in C5 General or C5 Tech - can't remember which). Either you have one of these broken tabs, OR one of the connectors may be coming loose in the IPC. However, if that were the problem, I'd expect other problems to be showing up too. If the HUD display still cycles when pressing the Page button and if the other lights still dim when turning the dimmer pot, then I'd have to say its likely the broken tab, not the connector coming loose (because those other functions are all wired through the same connector). Unfortunately, to fix the broke tab problem will involve totally removing the IPC and HUD, which is a daunting task if you've never done it before. Let us know if you still can't find the relavant thread with a little more searching. Also, if you need help getting the dash apart, we can help with that too (but you'll need a stiff drink first).

I honestly couldn't begin to say about just "fixing" it to a useable height or not. If it were mine, I'd be taking my dash apart. I don't know how to drive a car without HUD anymore (I can't seem regulate my speed without it...no, seriously!!). I've never actually taken my HUD out (never had any problems with mine), but I have had my IPC out several times. If you need help, let us know. You might try sending a PM to the original poster who fixed his broken tab from the other thread - then you've got someone with first hand experience leading you.

If you're even moderately mechanically-inclined, you can do this fix with the various how-to's on dash and HUD removal and the help of the members here and save yourself a bunch of cash. Plus, you'll fix the HUD properly and get familiar with your car in the process. If you were closer I'd say bring it by and let's have at it. Maybe post in the Midwest section and see if someone nearby can lend a hand.
