Many thanks for all of the kind replies. I appreciate the wisdom.
At one point in my life, I was an OTR truck driver. I am familiar with shifting. I am very comfortable going with a manual transmission. The better gas mileage and performance had crossed my mind, as well.
I've PM'd a couple guys with Zs for sale here on the forum, and not a one of them seem unhappy with their car. One in particular I hope to look at very soon.
I would, however, be using the car as pretty much a daily driver, and wouldn't be taking the car to the track, ever. Also, the wife is much more supportive of a 'vert than the Z.

Truckdrivers...
Nobody here is "unhappy"... NO WAY! Being a Vette owner takes mucho unhappiness away.
If your wife is part of the deciding factor, and she is going to be spending a lot of time in that passenger seat, get the vert. Of this, I am sure.
For me? I totalled my vert. I have rarely had anyone in the passenger seat. I know, me and my baby went up and down the coast for two years in the summer, but overall, I put 80K on that car mostly by myself. I considered the Z an upgrade. I don't have to consider my S.O. If we are gonna travel-travel- we take her Jeep.
The Z is badass. It's like always getting in a racecar. It has a much more "high performance" feel to it.
Good luck with your decision. Either way, you will NOT be unhappy!
If the comfort of your passenger is a large concern, the vert might be the better choice. The Z is loud, rough, no nonsense, and just a genuine badass. There is less sound dampening material and the ride is much more harsh.
Personally I absolutely love my Z and wouldn't have it any other way, but passenger comfort is WAY WAY WAY down on my list.
My opnion may be a little bias as I have 2 verts, however 1 (96) is an auto and the other (00) is a 6 speed. I love the Z06, but I think I love verts more. My 96 is stock and my 00 is in the process of getting mods, so by the time I am complete the 00 vert 6 speed will be as fast as a Z06. Fast 00 vert = as much fun as a Z06. Just my .02 cents. Good luck with your decision. The nice thing about your situation is that it truly is a win win!

Sounds like you need to balance your desires with your wife's wishes. Conflict indeed
If the car is going to be a DD, you won't be taking it to the track and the wife is supportive of a Vert, the answer to your conflict is obvious.....
Buy the Vert

Looks like about 50/50 so...get a coupe with the targa top. Best of both worlds. And if you think you'll be taking long trips the s.o. will have room for her luggage
Get a vert, it is the only way to travel. As far as being less aggressive I really haven't seen too much running around ZO6 or otherwise that looks or handles more aggressively than my vert and I can work on my tan while I am going 200+ mph and that is
I wanted a Z and I ended up with a supercharged vert, the wife and I couldn't be happier. It looks like a Z when the top is up anyway. Rollllll Tide!!!
if you want a ***** to the wall driving experience the z06 is for you an amazing looking animal to boot.Verts a lot tamer sunday drive kinda ride but still a CORVETTE i love them all.Drive them both get the one that gives you a woody. In my case Z06 all the way.

For a DD the Coupe/targa is the best compromise of all. Not that hard to mod "close enough" to Z performance for most of us who are not skilled track guys. And you can pop the targa for a pretty good open air feel. Finally, the $3K you save vs. the equivalent vert or Z can get you a newer or lower-mileage example.
Do yourself a favor and drive one of these as well.

You need to drive an example of each and see which fits your driving preferences. The Z will have more power and better handling stock for stock, but if you like the open air driving, your choice is clear.
I've owned them both at the same time. I opted to sell the Z06 because it was to specialized. With some effort and money you can build a lot of the Z character into a vert. Then you'll have a little of both. Can't do it the other way around. Unless you want to cut the top off the Z.
