I had the same problem and just put a small amout of Gorilla Glue on the lock nut (I ground the nut round first so the boot covered it looked better too) and it worked perfectly
I installed a C6Z shifter and **** and the stock boot doesn't fit around the new ****. I cut the factory ring out of the boot (at the top) and turned it inside out, strapped a zip tie around it at the **** and folded it back down and clicked it in. Looks good, fits around the wider **** and stays put. Might help...
I used a dab of clear silicone conservatively applied to the Hurst 8-ball shift **** locknut, and slid the boot up over the nut and let it dry overnight. It's solid as a rock now, and can be removed as necessary in the future since the silicon remains relatively pliable.
when I installed my C6Z purchased from stol3n, he informed that I would need a rubber o-ring from the hardware store as was already stated. Works great! I think it was a # 14 or #15
