Hey Guys,
I posted this in the Tech section and haven't gotten much response. How about it over here? My next mod is to install Long Tube Headers. I am wondering how much the Stainless Steel changes in color as they age. I would love to see pictures of headers that have been on the car for a while. I am leaning toward the LG streets w/cats, but have to spend $400+ to get them Jet hot treated. What do you guys that have headers think about having them ceramic coated or not?
Thanks for your help.........Dave

Thanks Baddvette98. They look beautiful. How is the color now that they are installed? I really want to see how they look where they bolt to the head. How was the install?

How raw stainless looks after a few thousand miles:

How stainless looks coated (and will remain looking that way):

Thanks for the pictures. What made you decide to have them coated?

I thought having them coated inside and out would keep more of the heat inside, so I would more easily pass emissions in BC Canada, I don't know if it will as I haven't been tested yet. Not til 2010

I personally like the golden patina...

Here's a good comparison of the color change, note the SS clamp compared to the collector;

One factor to consider is heat retention . Car Craft did a test several years ago where they used the same motor,,and the same headers,,one set painted mild steel,,the other ceramic coated inside and out. Don't remember the exact #s,but using one of those infrared heat guns and there was about a 150 degree difference at idle and something over 300 difference at 3000rpm. That would make quite a difference in under hood temp,,even a little difference in the tunnel area!!Should make a small difference in maintaining exhaust heat/velocity. Not to mention staying better looking over the long haul!!

The ceramic coating inside and out is one of the reasons I went with Melrose.

I've had them on the car for 4 months now of daily driving and they still look like new.

Excellent responses. Thanks guys for the info. I think I am leaning toward the coated. The looks and the slight increase in performance seems the way to go........... Dave

My stainless headers turned gold within the first day of tuning. I pulled my 1 3/4 off to install my 1 7/8 and they are dark brown after 2 years.
