Default TPS Replacements

I just went on to the Tire Rack Site to price out new Wheel/ Tire units and seeing that my TPS's are 10 years old I want to replace them too. Tire Rack is quoting me the following for my '99.

Your system includes:

315MHZ TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR
$540.00 for a quantity of 4

C5PRO
$199.96 for a quantity of 4

KIT20007
$12.00 for a quantity of 4

Total Price: $751.96

Am I missing something here? Don't know what the C5PRO is but I assume that it's part of the TPS package. I stay w/ forum venders when possible but not to the point of spending a month's retirement pay on something.
Thanks for any help friends.
Safe driving,
Woody

Default Tps

Got mine from Gene Culley here on the forum. Gene seems to be a pretty fair guy and well liked by all. Got my sensors for the 98 from him and they were around $425. or so complete.

Here's Gene's prices:
97-2000 Sensors

10438853 - sensor – 85.89 each
15234846 - nuts – 3.21 each

Total setup of 4 is 390.97 shipped!

I would order them from Gene and have Tire Rack install them as they are mounting the new tires. Then after they mount the wheels back on your car I would get a good sized magnet and program them to the proper wheel positions, using the following instructions:

Tire Pressure Monitoring Sensor Programming

The Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) system interfaces with the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) through the serial data line. Once the program mode is accessed through the IPC, each sensor's unique identification code can be programmed into the receiver's memory. Each sensor must transmit the unique code in the proper sequence. A magnet must be held close to the sensor in order to force the sensor to transmit the identification code. The IPC will display a message as each sensor is programmed, and when to proceed to the next sensor for programming. The receiver also sends a message to the BCM to sound the horn one time, indicating that the sensor properly transmitted an identification code. If the programming sequence is cancelled before any sensor is programmed, or if the vehicle's battery is disconnected, the receiver will remember all current identification codes. As soon as the receiver learns the first sensor identification code, all previously stored codes are erased from the receiver's memory.

Tool required (any medium strength magnet, U or Disk type)

The official GM tool is (J 41760) Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) Programming Tool.

1. Turn the ignition to ON.
2. Press the RESET button in order to clear any IPC display warning messages.
3. Press and release the OPTIONS button on the DIC to scroll through the display options until the IPC display is blank.
4. Press and hold the DIC RESET button for 3 seconds.
Notice: Refer to Body Control Module (BCM) Programming/RPO Configuration in Cautions and Notices.
5. Press the OPTIONS button again until the TIRE TRAINING message appears.
6. Press the RESET button until the IPC LEARN L FRONT TIRE message appears in order to begin
the programming sequence.
7. Install the J 41760 Tire Pressure Programming Tool over the left front valve stem.
8. The horn will sound, indicating the left front TPM sensor is programmed.
9. When the horn sounds, proceed to program the next TPM sensor in the following order as directed
by the IPC messages:
- LEARN R FRONT TIRE
- LEARN R REAR TIRE
- LEARN L REAR TIRE
Programming Cancellation
1. The programming mode will be cancelled if any of the following conditions are met: - The program mode is exited through the DIC.
- The ignition is turned to OFF.
- All four sensors have been programmed.
- The TPM system has been in the program mode for longer than 2 minutes and no sensors
have been learned.
2. If the program mode is cancelled with less than four codes stored, the receiver will only accept the codes programmed up to that point.

It sounds like they want to charge you $200 to program. (If C5PRO is programming the new sensors). If you are intent on changing the sensors, I'd buy from Gene, have them installed and program them myself.

In fact, before I spent that kind of money, I'd upgrade the receiver, fobs and tps to the newer version. The sensors and the fobs are much cheaper.

Not familiar w/ upgrading the receiver or newer TPS units. Thought that couldn't be done.
There's no way they could program my TPS's as my vehicle is no where near any of their facilities. And I know I wouldn't have any prob doing it myself.
Thanks guys

Very easy to do yourself BEFORE you have the new sensors installed.

Make each sensor with it's intended wheel position, and program them on your lap inside the car with poolboy's writeup.

Just make sure the tire installer knows where each one belongs.

It might be better to talk to somebody at Tire Rack if you want to buy a tire/wheel setup with the sensors pre-installed Vs paying to have them installed after you receive the package. I purchased a package from Tire Rack for my 97 a few years ago and they sold me a set of sensors installed on the wheels for a better price than I could get anywhere else for stock GM sensors (at the time it was $85 per wheel). I don't know if Luke is still working for them but he is the person I usually talk to to when ordering Corvette stuff from them. On line ordering is nice but it doesn't work well when the web site programmers make mistakes.

You might do better by shopping around for the wheels from a different vendor.
Then you could program and install the new sensors on the wheels yourself.

Just food for though, but check on that auction site or elsewhere for the TPS/Receiver/Keyless Remote combinations that were selling for $250ish IIRC. You apparently can retrofit the newer style stuff into the 97-00's all at once and get rid of the higher priced early TPS and keyless remotes.

Get your stuff from gmpartshouse.com. Much cheaper than what you were quoted and I too have no idea what those other things are that they quoted you.

Not really, they wanted $94+ for them and listed some "funny parts" like valve stems for 1997-2004 ?

Well, I got an answer back from Tire Rack on the C5PRO as I didn't know what it was.
Here's the following response:

The C5pro is the tool used to program the sensors to communicate to the car. You only need one tool per car.
You don't need to order it if you want to take your car to the dealer for programming but I think it will pay for itself.

As I said for Tire Rack you need to talk to somebody Vs checking the web site. Call Gene and talk to him. Screw the web site as you have a high probability of getting inaccurate data. E-mail doesn't work much better.

There are so many different tire pressure sensors and tools on the market nowadays the web site programmers can easily make mistakes when posting what is and what isn't needed for any particular car.

Just checked w/ JW Motoring - Looks promising and a He!! of a lot cheaper. I'm sure Batts have just been replaced so has anyone bought these before and if so how's the quality been?
Also w/ them there's a $13.00 rebate given back per old sensor that you send back.
