Default 2001 C5 Z06 Considerations

I'm thinking about buying a 2001 Z06, but considering when turning around to sell it will it be harder to sell then the 02 to 04 Z06s. The one I'm considering has a forged 347 ls6 block in it with milled c6 heads, so the 2001 Z06 with lesser power is not an issue on this one. What do you guys think will resale be effected by the year and the mods?

The only reason the 01's are kinda taboo is because of the ring sealing issues that some had and the lower hp engine. The one youre considering seems to have addressed both situations. I wouldnt worry about resale value anyhow. Some consider mods to be a plus, some dont. The right person will pay the right price for what he considers the better value for him.

You get the advantage of the better looking (thinner spoke/darker paint) Alcoa wheels (albeit slightly heavier), and better looking fender badges

I don't think you will have any issues...it's a Z! I have an '01 and it's great...would only be better if it was SW!

Generally, if it would sell for less, then you should buy it for less. The only real issue is the cost over the time you have had it. if the car is to your liking otherwise, and the price reflects what it is, then you should feel comfortable doing it.

Actually the '01 Z06's have the lighter forged rims as opposed to cast for '02-'04.

'01 Z06s also have more headroom and do not have the cheesy looking "boxes" on the B-pillars next to the headrests. This is a huge plus for resale!

No, the forged Alcoa are slightly heavier than the 02-04 Speedlines.

Default Alcoa and Speedline OEM rim specs..........

Apparently there is no more than 1/2 pound difference between the Alcoa and lighter Speedline OEM Z06 rims ( part numbers are from GM Parts Direct website):

The 2001 and early 2002 M/Y Z06 Alcoa forged OEM rims :
17x9.5 #9593803 & 9593804 fronts weigh 19.6 lbs

18X10.5 #9593805 & 9593806 rears weigh 21.4 lbs

The early/mid 2002-2004 M/Y Z06 Speedline spuncast OEM rims:
17x9.5 #9594808 & 9594809 fronts weigh 19.2 lbs

18x10.5 #9594810 & 9594811 rears weigh 21.0 lbs

Bowling Green continued to install the Alcoa rims onto the 2002 M/Y Z06 till supply ran out.

2004 Z16

The rims that came on the Z16; fronts #9595433, rears #9595434 I could not find recorded weigh.

The 2001 forged Alcoa rims are slightly heavier than the Speedline spuncast rims used from 2002-2004.

My answer to your specific question is that the 2001 Z06 is a milestone car for GM. Even with the stigma of disinformation and urban legend and the fact that the 2002-2004 Z cars are slightly more refined, the 2001 Z06 will hold its own in the market place.

My 2001 Z06 is a great car ( that I have upgraded with 2002 Z06/LS6 parts). I don't plan on selling any of my C5s ( two 2000 FRC and 2001 Z06)ever, so resale isn't a factor for with these C5s.

I get 20.32 lb (and ever so slighty more for my other) 01 Alcoa 17x9.5. These are cleaned to like new, dried, no wheel weights, center cap, or valve stem. (This is my calibrated digital shipping scale.) I haven't ever weighed my rears but will next time the track tires comes off.

My 02-04 Speedlines coming lighter than virtually all the posted weights, they vary to, but between front to rear they come in generally .7-1 lb lighter. (For instance, the rear 18x10.5" Speedlines are almost as light as the front 17x9.5" Alcoa's)

All that to say, in my experience, the 02-04 Speedlines are closer to 3/4-1 lb lighter per wheel than the Alcoa (which is more than the posted specs I've always seemed).

It would be interesting to know what the actual load ratings are for the forged vs spun cast.

The 01's get a (unjustified IMHO) bad rap, and the prices can/do reflect that in the marketplace, but it's a great way to get into the C5Z06 world and for less $$.

I have an 01 and could not be happier. 01 has Alcoa forged wheels, they are worth some money. They had a screen maf, different badges, and no HUD. You can add HUD for about $450. I did the install myself and it looks factory.

Exactly. The difference in value between now and the future will pretty much be the same between an '01 and '02-'04. It is worth slightly less now, and will be worth slightly less then. So there is no reason to worry about buying an '01 due to poor resale.

There were more changes than that. Read pages 2-6

"The ’02 Z06 wheels are a tiny bit lighter and made by a different supplier using a new process but they carry over the "old" look."
...
...
"We like this because we can get better throughput, which we need to be able to build more Z06es, and we’ve been able to take some mass out. A set of Z06 wheels is .7 kilos (1.5 lbs) lighter than 2001 forged wheels. That’s a tiny amount of mass, but it’s in the right direction. In 2002, the painted (base) wheels and the Z06 wheel will use this cast-spun technology. It really is the next, new technology that’s the best for making a Corvette wheel."
