Do the automatic transmissions shift a little harshly or are they very smooth? Shopping for one and test drove a 2000 with 48k miles on the clock. Car is almost perfect looking. Has some bolt on mods (FAST intake, I believe a 90mm throtle body, Blackwing air intake, BBK headers, full cat free Bullet exhaust). When driving I feel as if the car shifts a little hard. Guy says all auto vettes shift this way. The down shifts felt very smooth only when accelerating normally did I feel those shifts also I belive they only feel that way while driving less than 30-40mph. She's a beast thats for sure! The power did feel great! Thanks for advice.
They may have installed a performance download which would firm up shifts.
Man!!!! Thats it! I do believe he said something about that. Well. feeling more comfortable about this. Non-the-less I'm having a mech look at for his opinion aswell.
My A-4 shifts real "harsh". That is how I want it. My wife doesn't drive a stick very well & since she likes to drive the car also, so it's an auto for me. Besides, if tuned properly, an auto is quicker than a stick.......
the shifts are smooth sounding in mine, but the feel of the car can be a bit harst, especially in the 1s2 to 2nd. Can also be smooth, depends on how hard im accelerating. If I am on it kind of in the middle, it is usually has a buck as it goes from 1st to 2nd. If I am easy, smooth. If I am on it hard, I feel the shift, but would still say it is smooth.
I have a A4, wouldnt call the shifts "harsh". Very smooth during regular driving and when I get on it it just pulls like a . . .(well Ill leave the numerous references out :-) ) . . .but it pulls hard, not harsh.
Possibly he had the car "tuned" which would adjust the shift points?

More than that, it sounds like a hand held tune with quicker shift points & no engine mods. (tune)
A stock A4 has lots of slip and low line pressure which equates to it shifting like your mom's Caddy. This however can be adjusted with tuning software or a handheld and it will feel much different.
Hard/soft shifts are subjective and difficult to express via text. I'd suggest that you inquire if the PCM has been re-flashed by the dealer...essentially setting it to stock and have a personal mechanic familiar with GM and the 4L60E tranny take her for a spin.
me thinks maybe im in the same boat as this guy. depending on where it is at when it shifts, it can make your head snap a bit. Car pulls nice and hard, and when under full throttle does not shift until after the shift light comes on on the HUD.

I thought my owner's manual said that only the 6spd cars had the shift light in the hud?
