Numbers matching?

I was surfing over at the C3 section and read a thread about numbers matching & etc. It made me wonder...do we have numbers matching, like in the V.I.N? Haven't heard any discussion about changing blocks etc., so maybe it is not an issue any more?? thanks, Dave

2000 Helms shop manual, page O-7:

"A VIN derivative can be used to determine if a vehicle contains the original engine or transmission, by matching the VIN derivative positions to their accompanying positions in the complete VIN."

VIN Derivative Position = Equivalent VIN Position

1 = 3 (Car Division)
2 = 10 (Model Year)
3 = 11 (Assembly Plant)
4-9 = 12-17 (Plant Sequence Number)

if you wanna learn about numbers matching do a search over in the C1/C2 section there will be pages of information. there is just more then if if the vin matches what is stamped on the engine block. but for your newer cars I don't think it will ever be a issue
