Well. my '98 Vert sucked in some water a month ago. It still runs but probably has a bent rod. Tomorrow the teardown begins. Insurance may cover repairs but a new LS1 may be in order. In which case I may have to cover a large percentage. It had 122000 miles on it but was running strong. I put a new top and seats on it the week before.
So, Keep it and add a new power plant or find a used LS1 or .........ughhh, let it die?
LS6 is only a little more price wise, but would it require more mods to the trans, brakes etc.?
You can put an LS7 in without touching any of those things....
suggested? maybe not depending on how you drive, it, possible? Heavens yes.
My suggestion: see what's wrong with it a set of push rods are cheap, even if yo have to change rods and springs $350 for nice stuff and you're on the road again, much cheaper than a crate motor.
If you do go crate, take a look at a nice LS3- drop right in and no need to change anything on the car (assuming you get one with a 24x reluctor ring) they make a good amount of power easily with a mild cam. If it's an A4 you can put a lot of power into it before having issues with the tranny- 505 rwhp in a 2000 and going strong for a year so far. As for the brakes: why would you need to upgrade them: are you going to be going exponentially faster just because you have more power? Probably not. The brakes on the C5's are very capable- an upgrade never hurt anyone, but don't feel like you have to the moment you get any more power.

Thanks.
I just mentioned brakes because I beleive the Z06 got upgrade. I'm more concerned I guess about the trans (6spd), clutch and such maybe being upgraded due to the higher HP.
I've been hoping just a repair would be better, but I'm not in an area where I can get a lot of options. It's at a dealer right now and I've been in a battle w/insurance for a while. They've come around a bit recently.
GM is about to release the LSX454 crate motor by late March. Its a complete long block and direct drop in motor, just add the LS7 intake and a few other basics. Approx 600+ HP!!! I am waiting for this motor for my own C5....!!!!
and you can add, no running vette, and coming to you soon.........no money! Agree that you not make any decision until motor is torn down. It just might not be that bad.
