What about putting a piece of door edge guards over the fiberglass edge? This would protect from them cutting into the leather
Doubt they would stay on.
VetteEssentials does it right. When you purchase new seat covers/foam from them, they include some heavy felt slip-on protector pads that go "under" the stock foam padding. These keep the sharp fiberglass "wings" from cutting through the foam (and eventually the leather covers). (see attached VE Photos). I do not know if they sell these separately - they are not listed for sale on their site. You can however make you own very easily.
Doing what the OP suggests would possibly leave the sharp plastic wings in direct contact with the inside of the leather cover... just a temporary patch for the problem IMO.
I covered all sharp edges with clear vinyl tubing, I slit it open then taped it over the Bolster and seat bottom edges that are prone to cut into the foam. Worked great!
