it seems that my car is quicker and sounds more aggressive in this mode. Is this true or is it just my imagination. I just discovered this mode this pass summer.

As the Temptations once sang - "It's just my imagination....."
It allows traction control to be off, and active handling to remain on - that's all and nothing more.
Sorry dude....your imagination is running amok....no difference in sound or horsepower.....
Competition mode keeps your ABS system in place but shuts off the throttle control that normally keeps you from making a total *** of yourself and wrecking beyond repair.....LOL

In Comp mode you should experience the sensation of about 50 extra HP's and a sound level of an additional 30-45 decibles, of course this is only limited to your own IMAGINATION and should be used with extreme caution

Lol- Thank you for the info, the response is almost as humerous as my question
how do you get into it? i have a 2000 hatch. I've been in park and held it down for 15 seconds and the dash doesn't say it. i've held the button when on and off and still nothing

The Active Handling System, RPO JL4, debuted on the 1998 Corvette and became standard equipment on the 2001 model.
Chances are, you don't have comp mode on your 2000. It should go into comp mode after holding down the active handling button for 5 seconds.
Not sure what model years have the comp mode. I know that with the early version of comp mode the car had to be stopped. I have an '04 and can switch to this mode on the move.

What does the dash say?
If you have it, it will say "Active Handling" just forward of the button, on the console.

I have a 2000 vert and it has comp mode i think it was a option in 2000 have to be at stop and hold button 10 sec and then it says comp mode on dic.
When I picked up my FRC in October, I was talking heads, cam, etc., etc. After hammering it once in first gear (WITH the traction control on) I decided to go with headers and a Vararam this year until I learn how to drive it! Scared the poop out of me..:o Maybe I'll practice a bit with comp.' mode this year!

Like I said, not sure which model years have it and which don't. I know active handling became standard in 2001. I'm sure someone more knowledgeble will step in with the right answer.
That said, if the OP had the option on his car, it would have kicked in considering he held the button down for 15. I know in my '04 the mode kicks on by holding down the button for 5 seconds. He should consult his owner's manual to find out if he has this feature.

Active Handling - RPO JL4 was introduced mid-year 1998. I'm fortunate to have it both of my C5's, Competition Mode is somthing that you can engage only if you have Active Handling. It turns off traction control but leaves Active Handling engaged.
This has been discussed about a billion times, but here is a link that explains what it is and how it works.
When I picked up my FRC in October, I was talking heads, cam, etc., etc. After hammering it once in first gear (WITH the traction control on) I decided to go with headers and a Vararam this year until I learn how to drive it!:o Maybe I'll practice a bit with comp.' mode this year!
If we aren't carefull it can bite us. I have all of the bolt-ons (except H/C). When I hammered it (with TC off)I was shocked to see how fast the azz end of the car wanted to pass me on the right. The car lept from side to side until it straightened out. I couldn't have been closer to making a stain without actually making one. :o
Acive Handling was first introduced in late 1998. It was an option from that time, through 2000. Beginning in 2001 through 2004, Active Handling was standard equipment on all C5s. The 1998-2000 cars had Generation I, Active Handling. The 2001-2004 cars had Generation II Active Handling. Generation I Active Handling can only be engaged while the car is stopped...although you can begin the 5 second countdown while the car is moving, the car must be stopped at the point of timeout. So, you can hold the button down while coasting up to a light, for example, for approximately 4 seconds, but at that 5th second when it times out for Competitive Driving to engage, the car must be stopped or it will not go into Competitive Driving mode.
Generation II Active Handling can be engaged while the car is moving.
With Generation I, you cannot powerbrake with Active Handling engaged, either with Traction Control activated, or in Competitive Driving. The further you depress the accelerator, while attempting to powerbrake, the more the engine will downpower (torque management). In order to powerbrake, you will have to turn off both Traction Control and Active Handling.
This is not true with Generation II Active Handling. That system will allow you to powerbrake in Competitive Driving.
There are some other differences, also, such as Generation II Active Handling is also a little less intrusive than Generation I.
Generation II consists of different components and programming than Generation I. A Generation I car cannot be converted to a Generation system (at least for anything near a reasonable price).
Maybe more than you wanted to know, but there it is.
