Hi Guys: I normally hang out on the C-6 forum, but today I was at the car wash with my pickup, and noticed a C-5 coupe that was painted a beautiful dark red color. The owner was nowhere to be found and quite frankly, I am not sure what year it was, but I am trying to find out what the name of this color is? I am looking for a dark red for a hot rod I am building. Could it be the Anniversary Red? Or the Magnetic red metallic? Thanks
Here is the story on Anniversary Red: The paint chosen to celebrate the 50th anniversary used Xirallic flake pigments created by the German company, Merck KGaA. Xirallic, a trade name for corundum (aluminum oxide) platelets that wear a hematite (iron oxide) overcoat. The synthetic crystals have several desirable characteristics. They are flatter, smoother and more uniform than mica or aluminum.
The crystals lie uniformly flat and reflect light. The color coat on the Corvette is only about 20 microns thick. Using mica or aluminum would translate into a couple of hundred pigment particles. Xirallic flakes are only 100 to 300 nanometers in thickness allowing thousands to be used within the 20 micron thickness. Bottom line? A deep, red color that has to be seen to be believed. Sorry so technical of a description, but yeah, it would be something to spray on Hot Rod:
