Just put a quart of oil and move on, get over it, some alternate solutions but they r not guaranteed to solve this issue, even though a qrt of oil every 3-4.5k looks normal to me.
i used to have this issue until i went to a catchcan. I was getting about a quart every 3500 miles so when i got the catch can i thought maybe i'd be emptyin' the can every oil change. i haven't been suckin' more then an 1-2 oz each oil change. Idk if i got lucky and the oil PCV valve was just toast or what. It works great though Also my LS1 intake manifold was DRIPPING oil almost when i pulled it off. Replaced with a great, clean LS6 and it's bone dry in there
Hi...Are LS1's known to use oil? I'm using a quart evry 4-4500 miles on an engine with 115,000 miles on it.
Is this normal?
Mine has 102k on it and is also using about a quart every 4000 miles. I'm not too worried about it though, as long as it doesn't get any worse than that.
Ummmm....This is WHY I have the problem. I just changed to 0W30 Mobile....
I've heard some initial problems when switching over from conventional. I'll wait for the next oil change to see if there is an improvement....
I don't believe that to be excessive oil consumption, in fact I think it is great for a car with 115000miles. I wouldn't worry about any consumption of less than a quart per 750 to 1000miles.
The basis of the LS1 oil consumption issue is blow-by from the crankcase caused by poor cylinder bore tolerances and the thin flat faced piston rings. Out of round and tapered cylinder bores along with driving styles ( operating at high engine speed with no load) increased the oil consumption in the LSx engines. This oil issue came to a head with the introduction of the LS6 .
You don't indicate if you have manual or auto tranny. That also makes a difference in oil consumption.
The GM TSB allows for a band-aide fix for 1999-2001 LSx engines with that band-aide following thru on 2002-2004 M/Ys production.
The acutal fix is with the Gen 4 LS2 block , where the siamized cylinder bore cooling passeges were opened up to eliminate the hot spots that the Gen 3 engines experienced ( and which contibuted to the out of round cylinder bore condition that then over taxed the thin, flat faced, low tension piston rings , hence the blow-by).
A direct answer to your question of oil consumption of 1 quart in 4000 miles is that is normal or better.

My vette is a 99 6 spd that I drive conservatively and my truck, 2003 Sierra 5.3 is an auto overdrive with 3.73 rear. The truck I drive at no more than 2000 RPM to obtain some sort of mileage figure with and the Vette I drive to work on the highway in 6th gear 30 miles.
They both use more than what I would call "normal" amounts of oil.

I'd say that is not bad at all. Heck, my '00 with 11K miles was using a quart every 1200 miles. Had the dealer do the ring replacement and problem solved.
I have never had an engine after 1995 that ever used oil in the three to 7,500 mile change intervals. At the full mark at the start and at the full mark at the change.
