Your world just got alott cheeper. Go to a dealer or measure with OHM meter the vat chip on key(I Think 15 different ones) I did both to make sure I was right. You can buy on internet 1/2 priceor dealer. Without key it does not work (change lock) Than work on FOB. 97-99 Fob are the same with a passive lock(turn that off, it was not a good idea) If car was within 20 some feet it would lock and unlock all the time. A 2000 Fob will work, but no passive lock switch. Dealer $125- $175 I got mine on internet for $65 for both, but had to work hard. The 2001 - 2004 Fobs are alott cheaper. My 98 had a 2000 Fob and the owner warnmed me about getting the Fob to close. Go to manual and retrain Fob. I have won 4 and three worked, made the price go up.
Buy a key and make sure it works. It will save you $300 to $500

the cheapest way is usually to go to a local key shop. They should be able to measure your resister and make you a spare. If you do not have a key to duplicate (because it is lost) you can have a GM dealer make you a replacement, if you supply them with a VIN - might take them a day or two and you can be sure it will cost more than if you had not lost the only key...
