You did not specify whether or not you were intending on porting the heads or not, but I would refrain from doing so unless you (or anyone else considering doing this) truly know what you are doing, and are familiar with LSX heads (coolant passage/fastener boss proximity etc...). A skilled ports man can greatly improve upon a 243 casting (be it CNC or hand ported). Cartek, Wilson Manifolds, Livernois Motorsports & A.R.E. are a few great examples of competent porters that are up to the task.

Having worked as a cylinder head/intake manifold ports man for several years I can tell you that properly "hand porting" a set of cylinder heads is no easy job and definitely not cheap (I have over 50 hours in my LS6 heads). Port re-profiling is not guess work. You cannot just start removing material because you think it is a good idea. At the very least you would end up removing inconsistent amounts of aluminum from runner to runner (unless you plan on measuring each individual runner volume). Most importantly, you run the risk of diminishing velocity to the point of actually decreasing "mid-lift" volumetric efficiency by removing too much runner material (assuming NA 346ci here).

With that said you could always take your 243 castings to an engine builder/machine shop that can run a CNC porting program on them (this is what most shops have turned to in order to maintain consistency and also to cut down on expense). Prices for CNC work range from affordable to insane depending on the shop. If you really want to save some money, but also want great performing heads look into Texas Speed & Performance's P.R.C. line (226.5cc CNC ported 243 castings):

I have a set of the Cartek stage IV heads and the stage II cam and I made 453 and 400 to the wheels. They may be for sale soon. Im thinking of going with some equally ported, polished and milled Trickflows.

What modifications do you currently have (cam specs, exhaust, FAST 90/90, etc, etc)?
