Got a message on my DIC yesterday"High trans temp" tried to pull up the temp and this is what I got Trans temp xxx.what gives ? no problem shifting even at WOT. Should I change the fluid ,trans has 74,000 on it with no service work on it and no fluid change. I cleared it and no problems the rest of the day but still no temp available.Maybe the sensor went bad.
It happened about a year ago but went away and I never tried to pull the temp.Took it to a transmission place and he said it's a waste of money to change the fluid at this time.He knew a lot about C-5,6 vettes and really impressed me.
I may be wrong but seems I remember 150 -160 degrees.Soud right?
Well it will depend on the ambient temps and your driving scenario as well. I maintained 170F while cruising on the highway for two hours in 30F weather. In 70F I will see upwards of 190F considering how long I was driving. But your 160 seems a bit cooler if you have been driving in traffic in warm weather though.
Owners manual also recomends change I beleive. Unless you only drive like a Grandma, then you can go 100k. But, since you are checking it at WOT, I think you qualify for the 60k change interval. 70k, not so bad, but would start there and a new sensor for peace of mind.
As long as it stays under 200, you should be fine.
With OEM 187 degree thermostat, and without an aftermarket transmission cooler installed, there is no way to keep A4 temps under 200 degrees on summer days, in town stop and go traffic.

That's exactly why the GM recommended 100k mile transmission service interval is especially bad for C5 Corvettes.
I personally have a stick, however years ago in 2 different vehicles (not mine) a 300z and a f250 pu, after both my friend and my dad changed their fluid after a lot of miles on them, both trannys went out. Both mechanics said they would have been better off not changing the fluid. Just a thought, I am sure someone is much more knowledgeable about this subject.
