Default Column Lock

How do you tell if the GM fix has been done? I purchased a column lock bypass from CH but haven't installed it yet. I have not had any problems and so far haven't had a message on the DIC but don't want to get one. Is there an easy way to tell if it has been done? I have a 2002 6 speed. Thanks Ron

Default column lock

Thanks for the information, my next question is if the GM fix has been done can I install the bypass anyway or will that cause more problems?

My 2000 had both recalls done, Lock ring removed ..Acuator removed.

I replaced the failed relay with the CLB and the " Column Lock " message went away. It took about a hour to replace.

I ordered mine from Corvettes of Houston ..

Follow the instructions on the LS1 site. You should find a link on this site.

And you should be ready to go.

Thanks,

Mike

There have been a total of 3 recalls done on this issue. There are a ton of posts and information on the subject. Some of it is pretty confusing.

I do know that for the last recall, GM removed the pin from the steering wheel so the steering wheel can never lock again under any conditions. What these means is that even with no key in the ignition you can turn the steering wheel.

I have spent the last hour reading through all the posts on this and I will tell you why. I went to mess with the car today as its in the garage for the winter, had to charge the battery<it was dead from sitting, no trickle charge> got it charged up and started it, but the car when moving just dies, assuming the fuel shutoff. I got the pull key and wait 10 sec, did it and it says service column lock. I am not sure if recall was done, mn6 wheel turns with no key in, i planned to do the by pass this spring. My question I guess is from what I am getting is that even after performing the by pass the car will still die from the shut of ultimately leaving ti not drivable after the by pass......ahhh so confused and so frustrated. and specific advice or suggestions
thanks in advance
Nate

as far as the column locking with no key prior to the battery issue, i do not recall this ever happening so I would have to say that the column never locked. So since the car is not being driven currently, could I purchase the CLB and install it, have battery re charged, erase code from DIC and the car should be good to go??? The bypass will be in and not have to worry about the column lock and the car will be able to be driven normally. if by chance the bypass fails in the future then the car is back to the fuel shut off??? I just want to make sure I am fallowing all this correctly

Crap...

I think the same thing is happening to me. CLB is on the way but I believe I'm going to have to deal with the fuel shutoff issue.

I haven't driven the car (03Z) in about two weeks. Went to take it out today, was met with a dead battery. I put a charge on the battery and got it started only to get the Service Column Lock message. I turned the car off and the column locked. To my amazement, I cranked the car back up and the steering wheel unlocked. I went for a drive for about an hour with no problems.

I pullled the car back in the garage and let it sit for an hour or so. I went back out to tinker with it and when I went to pull it out into the driveway, it would barely crank and I was still getting the Service Column Lock message. I turned the car off, did what I had to do in the drive and it barely cranked again. That's when I noticed what seemed like the engine was cutting out, i.e. fuel shutoff. I had to feather the throttle just to reverse the car the few feet back into the garage.

What a PITA!

If your steering wheel will turn the wheels with the ignition off, the CLB is most likely installed.
You can also hear the column lock engaging when the ignition is turned on whenthe CLB isn't installed. It is sorta a whirling sounde of a solonoid pushing a pinion. (which is exactly what's happening)

I read some of your other posts as well, very informative !

If I understand correctly, installing the CLB will also take care of, i.e. disable the fuel shut off, correct?

I bought the car used and I think it's safe to assume I still have the original battery, side post AC Delco Pro 550CCA (75-5YR). So, a replacement is in order and it will be the first time I've replaced the battery.

Looks like I have a lot of work to do next weekend.

Right now my column is not locked and although I'm guessing, I think I'm experiencing the fuel shut off. It got late and I didn't take the car any further than in and out of the garage. At any rate, it seems as if it would cut off had I drove out on to the street. Suffice to say, the OEM battery is pretty much dead at this point.

Am I looking at a tow? Or what will allow me to get past the shut off? Is there a way to reset it or is the tune reprogram my only option at this point?

HELP...I'm a little confused right now. TIA !

Well, I got up this morning and checked my codes and found...

28 – TCS No Codes
40 – BCM 2 Codes
B2587H Column Lock/Unlock Drive (A)
B2592H Column Lock/Unlock Drive (B)
58 – SDM No Codes
60 – IPC No Codes
80 – Radio No Codes
99 – HVAC No Codes
A0 – LDCM 4 Codes
B2252H Key Cylinder Switch Fault
B2282H Battery #1 Fault
B2284H Battery #2 Fault
U1064H Loss of Communications with BCM
A1 – RDCM 3 Codes
B2283H Battery #1 Fault
B2285H Battery #2 Fault
U1064H Loss of Communications with BCM
A6 – SCM No Codes
B0 – RFA 1 Code
U1000H Loss of Communication Undetermined

They were all historical and I cleared them.

After doing some searching on the forums, I slammed this under the hood to replace the OEM AC Delco that was registering about 9.3V at last check...

So, after what you said yesterday...
