I don't have (knowingly) anything that's powder-coated. What exactly IS it? Does it leave a rough surface or a smooth one?
I saw a member here a while back who powder-coated his Z06 wheels a bright silver. Looked amazing! If I were to have that done... how would I clean them? Does powder-coating chip or flake? Is it pretty permanent and durable?

Thanks for any replies!
Powdercoating will leave a smooth glossy surface. You would clean them like you clean anything else...actually they may be easier to clean as stuff doesn't seem to stick the powdercoat as easy as it does to other surfaces.
From what i can tell, powdercoating won't chip or flake and is damn near indestructible.

I've got several things powdercoated on my car and it's extremely durable amd easy to clean.
It's a powdered pigment applied with an electrostatic charge. It's then baked, and fuses into a hard coating. If done right, it's very durable and chip resistant. The finish is smooth (if the underlaying surface is smooth), but not quite as glossy as paint.
I think I'll probably end up getting my rims powdercoated silver. I think the stock argent gray is okay... but bright silver rims really pop against a black car.
Anyone know a ball-park price on the cost of powdercoating rims?
It can fade from UV rays. I had the fencing to prove it.
It can chip, although it's pretty tough, more so than regular paint. I had two complete chassis, suspension parts and engine bay components to prove it.
It can be degraded by some chemicals. I had engine components to prove it.
It can be touched up with regular paint should it get chipped, but it probably won't be an exact match. Your best bet is to have the powder coating shop provide you with a closely matching aerosol spray touch up paint.
The powder coating will only be as good as the base preparation and experience of the person applying it.
It can look amazing on a set of wheels or anything else, but it isn't impervious to anything "thrown" at it.

I charge 300 plus shipping for stock rims, 100 extra for clearcoat, (required on silvers). Powdercoat is a polyester plastic resin that melts and is much more durable than paint.
