It appears my balancer is bent and wobbling. It seems to be causing a chirping sound as well. My question is, what will it cost to replace the balancer? Parts? Labor? What does this entail? Also, for the time being, is it worth trying to spray some wd40 in that general area where the chirping is coming from? As you can see, this is not my specialty. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks all.
1. Spraying it w/ wd40 will make it worse. You can try Belt Grip spray instead.
2. Common problem w/ vettes.. it's about $500. If you do it yourself, you have to drop the steering rack. Big job but doable.
3. You can put an "under drive" balancer on there and free up the motor a little. Check Byunspeed.com (forum vendor w/ great prices) for a balancer. They're better than the stock ones too. You'll also need an "over drive" alt. pulley. They're $20 and take 10 mins to put on.
4. If you ever plan on putting a supercharger on there, stay with the stock size balancer and have it "pinned" at the same time. It will save you a lot of headache later when you put the s/c unit on.
its not that hard to do, can be done on jackstands. hardest part is pulling it off/on and tightening the bia to spec. couple of hours max. while replacing could put a UD pulley and free up some power
I was faced with this problem and decided I was fully competent to do the job, but rationalized that I did not want to tackle something of this magnitude sitting on my arzzzz on the garage floor.
I was not looking forward to having to yank the steering rack and there are many here who will agree, that is by far the biggest PIA of the whole job. Others say it's easy - just time consuming and like trying to figure out a rubics cube in getting the rack out.
Turns out my balancer wasn't bad... the bolt had come loose and the balancer slid forward about 1/8 of an inch. GM fixed it nor nothing. They now use a different kind of bolt to keep it from backing out.
But.. if your balancer is shot, and if you have limited resources and skill, I would have it done - no question about it.
I was told by my mechanic that the balancer is bent. Could it be wobbling just because of a bolt and not actually be bent? I don't have the tools or expertise for this job. If anyone reading knows a good mechanic in the DC metro area please let me know. Or, if you can do it and you live around me, I would be happy to assist and pay you for your time.
If I end up having to go to a dealer or shop to have this done, should I expect it to cost $500 total? Or is that parts only?
