I am interested in a 2004 ce coupe.
The owner says he isnt a car guy but has had a mild cam installed and laso a k&N air kit.
I have never heard of a guy claiming not to be a car guy and then doing engine mods.
Does this sound legit? Do you think this car has been raced.?
There's a lot of corvette owners that have no clue when it comes to turning wrenches. They drive it in to the shop, tell them to do it, and drive out.
I would just make sure it's been tuned properly. That's the only thing to worry about.
Ask him for the work/component receipts and the original cam. As far as racing goes, all you can do is ask him.
I've done some work on my car ( Vararam, painted calipers, A/C actuator adjustment, remove BSM's, etc) but I wouldn't put in a cam, or change the heads myself. Had ECS put in a ZO6 3.42 rear for me. Chuck at Westchester Vettes did my tune. Not something I had the tools or the knowledge to do.
Lots of us have had work done by reputable shops. Get receipts, have the car checked by YOUR mechanic, and take your chances like with any used car.

Is he the original owner of the car - if not, it could have been modded before he bought it. Asking for any work receipts would be a good idea. And as far as has the car been raced - just ask the guy - about the only way to find out unless someone has seen it at the track.

Why would you do JUST a cam...even a mild one should have had other mods done with it or it was just a waste of money.
I don't consider the K&N a mod...it's more of a necessity.
I wouldn't do it. I bought someone elses modded car once and ended up paying dearly down the road. Sure, it seemed fine at the time, but in the end it cost me a lot of money. (I strongly believe it's because a lot of the work wasn't done right.) Lesson learned for me.
There are a lot of unmolested C5's out there for good prices. Buy one of those and mod it accordingly. That way, you know the job is done right.
Keep in mind mods that are easily reversible (like intake, exhaust, tires, etc.) don't usually add the value of a vehicle. Mods that are difficult to reverse often decrease the value of a vehicle or at least value it far lower than the original vehicle plus the modification. Almost no one gets their money out of mods in the end.
