I would have no problem meeting him at the airport with cash and making the transaction right there. There are plenty of people who carry that much or more cash around. Look at airports as a relatively safe place to do business. There is always plenty of security around. However, have him meet you with the car on the passenger pickup lane right in front of the terminal and do not meet him in a parking garage. I would think that someone from the forum who lives in the Gainesville area will see this thread in the next few days and offer to look at the car for you. As long as the title is clear and everything checks out on the car this should be a smooth and safe transaction for you and the seller. If you meet at the Jacksonville rather than Orlando airport you will be a couple hours further north for your drive home.

Yeah. He suggests I could wire him the rest of the money but I don't feel comfortable doing that before I see the car. I'm sure that he's not a scammer, but I want to see the car first. He says whatever I do is fine. Of course, he has $2000 in his account now. Not like I'm going to leave without a car.
I posted a thread in southeast regional, but no one responded
Karateboi,
You've got me convinced... you're not a nut case. You're just a naive kid looking to buy the car of your dreams. I wish you the best of luck. Make this trip an adventure, not a nightmare. RELAX. Check it out, pay the man, and welcome to the club. I'd love to see the smile on your face driving home.
Be careful.

Thank you. I won't deny I'm pretty.. inexperienced in this society.
My biggest concern as far as driving back is the hours/distance. I've never driven more than 2 hours straight (like on interstate). I drive to St. Louis (100 miles) a few times a year and that's about it.
I will take pictures along the way, I just hope I don't get lost. I have a GPS navagiation thing I'll bring with me but it doesn't always give the best route... and it doesn't know if certain roads are closed.
Thanks for the wish of luck.
By the way I don't think I'm leaving until 3-7-09. I thought about 2-28-09 (I have to go on weekend) but it's only 5 days away and I don't have other stuff figured out, such as insurance, license tag, etc.
So if anyone lives or knows someone that lives in Gainesville, FL. Please PM me.
Kai
P.S. I also have a few questions possibly before I leave, bear with me!

Ok. I just called Florida's DMV. Here's the problem.
Apparently FL requires out of state buyer to pay sales tax THERE. And the lady told me their system shows Illinois with 6.25%. But there should be a flat tax rate for private party transaction here in Illinois. Otherwise, I cannot drive the vehicle out of state because I can't get a temp tag without paying taxes there.
Also, for some reason the seller wants me to buy insurance NOW so he can cut his, does that sound fair? Technically I think you can buy insurance on a car you don't own but what would be the point? He's ONLY storing it in a garage, and if it's for comprehensive, it wouldn't cover him when the car is stolen since it's my insurance but I don't own the car.
Just out of curiosity...is there no Vette close by that would interest you? In any case, best of luck with the purchase. Post some pics when it's yours!!!!
I'm asking him to send me the title first so I can register it and bring the temporary license plate. Florida's DMV is not opened on weekend and they want me to pay taxes before I can get a tag there.
I said we could either write in the bill of sales or a separate contract, that I have only paid part of the price, and the remaining cash will be paid upon seeing the car in person.
Also, it doesn't make sense for me to send him 100% of the price before I even see a title (in person) or the car.
I'll book a ticket if he accepts my proposal and e-mail him the confirmation e-mail from the airline so he knows I'm going to be there for sure.
I provided him some facts about my family, as we have been in this town for 10 years.
Help me out here, people. If you were a seller, would that be enough for you? It looks pretty legit to me. There's no way I could be a scammer from his perspective. He's the one who has some of MY money, and I have nothing from him other than his name/address/phone #.
Ok, here's my 2 cents. Noway would I put insurance on his car while he still has it his garage untill the day U pick it up. I would not send anybody my ownership to the car. If your DOT will accept a photo copy of it for purpose of getting a permit, then I would go for that. If not, take the cash with you and buy this car. Take an illinios plate with you, put it on the car & drive it home.
Call my insurance agent, tell him I'm picking a new car up will provide the information when I get back in town. No insurance company I've been with has ever had a problem with that.
Take a rear tag with me
Pay the man the money, take the title, slap the plate on and head home. Screw FL and their sales tax. You can pay your home state when you get home.
But, isn't it illegal to use another car's plate? I already have a set of plates from an old car (that we sold).
Also, I'll check with my DMV tomorrow to see if they'll accept a photocopy. But when I called them this afternoon for a temp tag they told me that I have to get it from Florida. They said they do the same for out of state buyers if they buy a car in Illinois.
Ya your right. You have to get a tag from Florida, and it is illegal to run a wrong plate on a car, but we've all done it. The only legal way to do it is pay the florida tax & get the temp tag. Find out from il. DOT if you can credit the florida tax to your state. I have heard of doing it this way. You don't have to pay tax twice.
forget all that just buy a vette local.... there is no just joe regular vette worth driving 15 hours... for for 20K and all that hassle... so many stipulations on this car it sounds like a scam...then it probably is a scam

Its only a hassle if you make it one.
Its more of an experience.
I had fun searching/buying/figuring things out such as..ins,taxes,shipping etc.
