I have not attempted to remove mine, but isn't there a press fit clip at the top? Remove it and pull off?
In the latest issue of either "Corvette Fever" or "Corvette Enthusiast" there was a short article about removing them to install stainless cover replacements.

There is a place to fit a tiny screwdriver or probe at the bottom of the clip. Just pop it off and then pop the strut off.
There's a spring steel clip that secures the socket of the strut onto the ball end of the hinge brackets. Using a very small flat blade screwdriver, pop one side (only) of the clip, and the strut will easily pull off.
If you fully remove the clip, it's kind of a pain to reinstall.
If you do (unintentionally) fully remove it, and the spring clip goes flying, well it's even more of a pain to find the clip, and then the same pain to reinstall it.
I have had those clips go flying off to who knows where in the past. I have found a very simple trick. I use a piece of duct tape on the shaft and about 3/4 of the clip. When you pop off the one side, if the whole thing does come off....it wont go anywhere.

Well sure that would work, but you miss all the excitement of finding untold loose nuts, bolts, tools, family heirlooms, missing relatives, and what not as you crawl around your entire garage floor.
