I have a '99 coupe with the magnisium wheels. the previous owner had wheel weights placed on the outside of the rims. this is driving me crazy, but I'm not sure what to do about it. can these be removed some how without damageing the finish or do I live with it?
I should mention the weights are stick on

You might take it to a tire shop and ask them if they have an adhesive remover that would not harm the paint on the wheel but will soften the tape up. Might be able to get it to loosen up also with a hairdryer and some fishing line.
Hairdryer and dental floss sometimes works. Seems to cut a little better than fishing line. Try the spearmint flavored. Would drive me crazy to have them outside.
First- who does that?? It would drive me nuts too. What a squirel.
Make sure they use a plastic slide to remove the weight itself to avoid scratching. Then we have a wheel cleaner we use which works well on the adhesive. Has to soak for a bit. There's also gum-adhesive remover which works well on the double sided tape we use with our wheel weights.
What finish do you have, coated aluminum, aluminum, coated painted, or chrome?
Reason- You might not want to use the adhesive remover on an uncoated aluminum wheel. May stain. Just the humble opinion of a tire shop mgr.... 97C5
Those have a coated finish. 1. Slap the coconut who put them on the outside. 2 Let the shop use the wheel cleaner on the adhesive. Takes a little while, but works well, and won't damage the clear coat. Any Discount Tire should carry it, and be able to take care of them and rebalance them correctly. Or any other tire shop for that matter. Just make sure they have a Hunter 9700 balancer and a tech who's proficient with it. 97C5
I bought my 03 Z brand new, and the weights were installed from the factory on the out side .
From a functional standpoint THIS IS actually a more correct balance. HOWEVER from a cosmetic standpoint- a huge faux pas. The 9700 with an experienced tech should be able to accomplish a near dynamic balance with the weights inside the spoke.
On higher end vehicles where this is a concern- I would never allow weights to be placed outside the spoke. Especially considering that every time the wheel is rebalanced, the weights will have to be removed-leaving adhesive and scratches, and new weights affixed=more adhesive and scratches.
I will be trying something once the weather breaks. not sure what yet, but I cant live with them the way they are.. The other thing is I'm not real crazy about the wheels to begin with. I would hate to ruin the finish and have to put money into refinishing. I will post after I get up the nerve to try something.
I have used regular old wax to remove the adhesive from stick on wheel weights. It does not get it off as easy as a solvent, but it will work without harming the clearcoat.
