Default Is CAI safe?

I just took off my intake that came w/ the car for it's cleaning.

Well i noticed its a CAI since their is a tube coming from under the car to the little nipple at the top of the manifold.

So the two large cones provide filtered air. But the direct air is not filtered at all

This definitely isn't good for the car right?

So i continue rocking this filter setup? Or should i change it?

Can anyone identify it from my picture alone?

so, if you're saying that the hose that plugs into that nipple between the filters is under the car and not connected to anything then yes, that's not good. that looks like a place for the hose that plugs into the stock air box to be connected.

should be a tube connected to it (air pump). if not plug it.

That has nothing to do with CIA. I don't know that particular intake, but as previously said, that hose is probably supposed to go to the air pump. It's an electric motor looking thing that sits inside the driver's side nose of the car. Sort of under the headlight but down low mounted to the square steel tubes. You access it by removing the black plastic panel.

If the AIR system is removed, you can just plug the nipple on the intake. That's if it is just an open tube. lol. sheesh.

ooooo....

thanks for the answers.

I didn't know what the hell this tube was. Friend said its CAI. <--fukin made me look like an idiot on here

I still don't know where the other end of the tube goes. I was following it and it just kind of disappears under the car too a place I cant reach. I guess i'll double check if it goes to the air pump.

... also, whats an air pump? I know it pumps air, but its the first time i heard of such a thing.

pumps air

The air pump is part of your exhaust emissions
"EGR" system, It brings in fresh air to help in a more complete combustion of burned gasses.

i removed mine when i did headers

If it disappears to a place you can't reach it is going to the air pump. Just make sure it is plugged into your CAI or filter and leave it.

Arg, it's part of the EGR system.

I hate exhaust going into my engine. Damn hippies, i want good ole clean air.

If i'd remove the system, i would throw a CE due to O2 sensors saying my cats are not efficient right?

It isn't part of the EGR system. Its part of the Secondary Air Injection system. The AIR pump pulls air from the air cleaner and pumps it into the exhaust manifolds for a short period after start up. They do this to lessen emissions. Here is the description from the Service Manual:

Secondary Air Injection System Description

The Air Secondary Injection (AIR) pump on this vehicle is designed to lower the exhaust emission levels after engine start up.
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) commands the AIR pump relay ON, by supplying a ground to the relay control circuit. This action energizes the AIR pump which forces air (oxygen) into the exhaust stream. The PCM also commands the AIR vacuum solenoid valve ON, by supplying a ground to the control circuit of the AIR solenoid. With the AIR solenoid activated engine vacuum is then applied to the AIR shut-off valve. Freash air from the AIR pump then enters into the exhaust stream. The air that is introduced into the exhaust system accelerates catalysts operation reducing exhaust emission levels. When the AIR system is inactive, the AIR shut-off valve and check valves prevent airflow in either direction.

The hose is fastened to the port on the air cleaner so it gets filtered air. This will also prevent unfiltered air from flowing into the engine.

The picture below shows the stock air cleaner and the hose on the driver's side of the picture is the AIR hose that plugs into the stock air cleaner. The hose passes under the driver's side headlight to where the AIR pump is located. The stock air cleaner and aftermarket units like the Blackwing have a hole where the hose plugs into a grommet. Your air cleaner is different. The hose will have to clamped on the port with a hose clamp. Obviously somebody didn't know what they were doing when they installed the air cleaner on the car. Check the car over carefully as this could be an indication of additional bonehead hookups.
