I haven't seen any threads on this topic. Texas driving generates a lot of dust plus the dealer that replaced my engine was sloppy when it came to clean up. Does anyone have any recommendations on washing the engine? :flag
Re: Recommendations on washing engine compartment? (graveyone)
I use Simple Green on mine. I get the engine warm, not hot, and spray it down good with Simple Green, full strength. Then I close the hood and was the rest of the car. When the car is washed I open the hood and rinse off the Simple Green. Then start the car and let the engine warm up to help dry off the engine. It works well for me.

The Simple Green full strength works for me. I sometimes use a small brush to get out some of the heavier crud but usually the brush is not needed. Be careful not to saturate the hood liner with water.
Re: Recommendations on washing engine compartment? (mozin)
Since Simple Green is a corrosive, I would highly recommend not using more than a 50/50 mix and not letting it sit on the engine more than a couple minutes before you rinse it off VERY well. I've been doing that to my engine with great results. I spray everything down with Armor-All afterwards, let it sit for a few minutes and then wipe all the excess off. I also wash the engine first, start it up, wash and dry the rest of the car, turn engine off, wipe any excess water off, and then do the Armor-All thing.
I know for a fact that Simple Green is a corrosive as we are not allowed to use it on Navy aircraft due to that.
Re: Recommendations on washing engine compartment? (FRF Z06)
I use a Simple Green (diluted) solution. Spray it on, wait about 5 minutes and hose it off. If you do this often the dirt never fully gets a chance to build up.
Re: Recommendations on washing engine compartment? (graveyone)
I use my vacuum cleaner, on blower, to drive the water off the engine and other components, after I have washed it down. I tried an air hose but it was overkill!
Re: Recommendations on washing engine compartment? (graveyone)
I forgot to mention it earlier but I use my Toro leaf blower to dry the engine compartment after rinsing it. It is best to dry the engine compartment BEFORE washing the car because there is a certain amount of splashing around onto the painted parts of the car.

Since my car has been new I wipe down the engine every time I wash the car.....This way the dirt never has a chance to build up....this makes it very easy.

Even if you wipe the motor down every time you wash the car there are places you cannot get to that are going to accumulate dirt, and then you have to resort to the washing. I only wash my engine about once every six months. I don't cover any of the electrical contacts and haven't had a problem yet.
