Default California cars...any different than cars from other states?

Are original CA cars any different from those sold in other states due to the emissions requirements? I'm looking at buying a car from CA and want to know what I'm getting into! Thanks.

I don't think they are. When I bought my car from Nevada and brought it into CA the DMV inspected the emissions tag and said it meets CA regulations. I think all cars built in like the last decade are 50 state compliant.

They're faster. It was a federal mandate.

Lol, so I take it the general consensus is that they are no different? I can't find anything anywhere on the 'net that mentions any differences. I was concerned that the tune and/or exhaust may be different.

I think it depends on the model. I seem to recall that when the 2nd generation miatas came out, the HP was listed at 140, but ones sold in CA had 138 due to CA emissions equipment on those cars. I never noticed if that kind of thing has happened with any other models.

In all seriousness, this was common during the earlier days (70-80's), when manufacturers were really struggling to meet emissions laws, and still did not have all the systems controlled by digital computers. The Vette even had a different engine (305 vs 350) from the other 49 states.

But in recent years, most all cars are 50 state certified, to my knowledge.

It is possible that there may be some lighting or noise (muffler) differences that are small, but I believe even then, the mfr's opt to make the cars 50 state, because the differences are so small. A Chevy dealer (assuming you are asking about a Vette) could tell you right away on a specific model.

Regards

After running the Carfax, it turns out the car is originally from Washington instead of California anyway. It should be here in about a week and a half.

Default Only different on paper (build sheet that is)

Physically there is no difference between california cars and cars for the rest of the domestic market. The issue was an option on the build sheet that only went on california cars. On my 1987 build sheet there is an option (NN5 CALIF EMIS SY), this was not on other out of state cars, even though the cars where physically exactly the same.

My present 02Z carries emission build sheet code NF7, since my car was a Michigan delivered car I have no clue if the build sheet on a California destination car carries a different option for emssions on the buildsheet. I assume it was just something to designate that it was or was not a california delivered car. Maybe they charged dealers more or something.

As with the other poster I brought my car in from out of state, had the DMV inspect it (with no Cats and long tube headers at the time no less) and they signed off on it and registered it no problems at all.

Default California 2000 C5 under rated hp

" While the offical ratings didn't change, the ( California LEV)2000 M/Y C5 was probably about 5 hp short of the '97-'99s because of the 'pups' (pre-converters)". This according to statements made at a 2002 press conference by John Juriga , Asst. Chief Engineer for the Gen 3 Engines.
