Default oil extractor

Anybody use these oil extractors? I had heard some where that the hose that goes down the dipstick tube can't or doesn't reach the bottom for what ever reason,on the LS engines. I was thinking of getting one, you can also use,for tranny, and dif. extraction.

Our oil pans have batwings and baffles, it is hard enough to drain them using the drain plug (takes extra long time), I can't see this working very well.

Good luck using it on the trans and diff !

You should change the filter with each oil change and to do so you have to lift the car. So why not just drain the oil the regular way? Me thinks the hose in the dipstick tube (baffles, etc., aside) wouldn't get the scuzz at the bottom of the pan either.

I've used one called "The Topsider" for about 10 years now. It does a good job of extracting most of the transmission fluid, BEFORE I drop a transmission pan to replace the filter and fluid.

It prevents a big mess, when you can get MOST of the fluid out first.

What's your estimate of the amount of fluid left over when you do drop the pan?

It varies with the shape of the pan Steve, but it's usually no more than a pint on most of the cars and trucks that I've done.

Some remaining fluid will still be soaked into the the transmission filter as well.

those are mostly used on inboard boat motors where you can not get at the drain plug. I used the top sucker type for years and would never use it on my car. They leave a good amount of the old oil in the pan so why use them on a car or motor that can be drained from the bottom plug. That said I do know guys that have used them who believe its much a small amount of oil & it you chg you oil often enough what could be the harm. either way G/L
