I have a 2000 corvette coupe that has the Goodyear run flats all the way around. I need rear tires only. What is the thinking on having the front tires remain as run flats and put conventional tires on the rear.Thinking about the Sumitomo HRZIII tires for the rear. Can you mix run flats and conventional tires?? I don't take it to the track or make high speed turns, basically pleasure driving (approx.8,000 mi. per yr.)However I do want tight handling. Also, does anyone have an opinion on the Sumitomo tire. Always had the run flats. getting tired of the noise. Even though I don't need 4 tires I can equip. the car with 4 Sumo's cheaper then just replacing the rears with the Goodyear EMT'S (RUN FLATS). Need advice. Help. Also any recommendation on tires is greatly appreciated.
thanks plunkman
Most forum members will tell you it's not a good idea to mix and match run-flat with non-run-flat tires. I'm one of those as well. I replaced my OEM Goodyear EMTs, front and rear, even though I had maybe 5-6/32nds left on the fronts. I decided I still wanted the safety/comfort of run-flats, so I went with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S ZPs.
Not cheap, but less than G/Y EMTs, and I'm very happy with them.
Whatever tire you decide to go with, really don't recommend mixing run flat and non run flat, as I believe it will negatively affect the handling of your car, and your personal safety.
I also have run flats on the front and non run flats on the rear and have no ill effects. Needed to replace rears and didn't want to retain the run flats but didn't have the $$$$ to put on all 4 non runflats. Since there was still useable rubber on the front run flats I mixed them.

I agree, I did the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S ZPs also, a cheaper, quieter run flat and an all season tire. It fits my driving style but others will have different opinions based on theirs.

I couldn't stand the GY runflats! At 17000 mi with plenty of tread remaining I replaced them with Michelin ZP's and couldn't be happier!
