Default Service column Lock

well I got my 2000 started after installing a new battery (recommended by a whole bunch of you ) and as soon as ir started up,it had a warning message, saying, Service column lock. Not knowing any better, I happily drove it away and the message stayed on. When I got home, the owners manual had dire warnings that The car should be towed to a dealer for service.( Page 2-101) It had something to do with the lock on the steering column and that it shouldn't stay on for more than 10 seconds. Well I had driven it home several miles and far more than 10 seconds after the new battery and nothing drastic happened,so I wonder if I really should bring it in for service.

Best thing is to go here http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...ky-please.html

Read through all of the pages... yeah i know it's long but you'll find your answer to your situation.

Your's may be as easy as removing a fuse for a few seconds and reinstalling..... can't remember which fuse it is but it's in the above thread....

I wouldn't bring it to the dealer unless you have a lot of extra cash to give away needlessly. (And if you do please tell me where you live as I'm saving up for a Maggie and accept all donations. )

Here are some things to check:

Fuses under the passenger footwell. Check the following ones 9, 13, 19, 22, 23, 25 47 and 50. One or more may have blown.

Pull all the codes and write them down. Then clear them all and drive the car for a bit and see what returns. Post here which ones return if any.

It may well be that the relay in the K Harness has failed. If that is the case you can remove the K Harness and plug the actuator into the connector that goes back to the BCM. Here's a link to the install instructions for a CLB.

http://www.ls1howto.com/index.php?article=24

In the instructions they direct your attention to a female connector under the dash that is to the left of a large yellow connector.

The K Harness looks like this:

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...ight=k+harness

The actuator gets plugged into the female connector on the K Harness and the male plug of the K Harness gets plugged into the female connector under the dash. Unplug both ends of the K Harness and plug the male connector of the actuator into the female connector under the dash. That is the Prerecall wiring.

This should work. I would use that as a temporary solution until you order and install a Column Lock Bypass. (CLB) They are available from Corvettes of Dallas, Corvettes of Houston or Thunder Racing for about $50 plus shipping.

Let us know how you make out.

Do not take it to the dealer. You had low voltage on the PCM bus which caused the CL fail.

As others have said.

Sounds like your had one phase of the recall done and you'll need to pull the fuse for a minute or so to clear the message.

Some phases of the recall required reprogramming the system so that fuel cutoff would occur. Yours obviously did not have that which is good otherwise you would not have gone more than a foot.

Since you don't know what you have, you may wish to open the lower section up and look for the components mentioned above.

If no bypass module, then order one also as described above.
