Default Overheating?

Hey guys.
78 degrees today in NC. Drove 20 miles to a cruise-in. Temp. in my stock 2001 Z06 is always around 212 degrees just like my owner's manual states. But as soon as I got in town and had to slow to about 5 or 10 mph, the temp. went up around 225 degrees. So I panicked and left town and got back up to 35 and 45 mph and temp. went right back down to 212 degrees. Drove 20 miles home and temp. stayed dead on 212 degrees. This is the warmest day I have driven the car.
Could this be normal when you have to drive really slow? Had car only 4 months and temp. never went past 212 degrees but the weather was always colder.
Thanks in advance,
Randy

Try turning the A/C on and let the fans kick in.
Works for me in traffic.

It could be many things, however, 225 is not too hot for the C5. I would check the fans to see if they are coming on. One way to do it is to raise hood, start car, with engine all ready warm and turn on air conditioning. Fans should come on. Another thing to do would be to raise front end up and clean out the debris you will probably find in the radiator.

I wish they made a sticky for this even 230 is not over heating.

The low speed cooling fan is commanded on when the coolant temperature reaches 108°C (226°F). It is turned off if the coolant temperature lowers to 104°C (219°F). The high speed cooling fan is commanded on when the coolant temperature reaches 113°C (235°F). It is turned off if the coolant temperature lowers to 108°C (226°F). When the A/C is on and the coolant temperature reaches 85°C (185°F), the low speed cooling fan will be turned on at vehicle speeds less than 56 kPh (35 mph).

This is right from the tech manual.

As long as I'm moving, in town or on the highway, my temperature stays around 187F. It will come up a bit in town at slower speeds, like 30mph. This is on a stock 01 with a clean rad.

The only time it gets up to 225F is in real slow stop and go traffic or if I leave the car sitting idling for a long time.

I'd be tempted to check the front of your AC condenser/radiator to see if you have some garbage in there blocking the air flow.

Normal, but a bid scary when it happens. It only happens in stop and go traffic in hot weather. When the temp gets over 225 (still far from the red zone) the high speed fans start and the temp goes down. If you put the ac on, the high speed fan will come on earlier and the temp will not go that high. If you let it run in your driveway without moving until it reaches the temps described, you will see how it works. And to put you at ease, it will not overheat.

Just experienced similar cooling issues (mine was approaching 235) I replaced the thermostat (includes housing assy.) and I also replaced the temp sending unit (over top of #1 plug) Cost me $40.00 total. Now it runs around 185-190 consistantly.

Thanks guys.
I guess I panicked for nothing. Still trying to learn all I can About these cars. It's was just because it never happened before with me but maybe because the weather's a lot warmer now.
Thanks again,
Randy
